Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Van Diemen's Land
« on: Friday 08 April 22 14:43 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to you both "expressions" it is. Just for interest his name was Richard Hulcup and was transported to Australia for seven years for stealing turkeys. He wasn't the best behaved convict and served eight years. Some of it in solitary confinement. I actually spent 15 minutes in the pitch black solitary confinement cell in Port Arthur, Tasmania and you literally cannot see your hand in front of your face. Upon release he married and moved to Melbourne where he was in an altercation with police. He died from his injuries.

Would I be able to find details of the accident in the attached note. Among the casualty lists various number notations in the "600 s" appear, 607 in this case. What does that indicate ? Thanks for looking.

That you SiGr,
Most of the family are from Winterbourne Gunner and births registered at Salisbury Wiltshire. I will now search for the surname "Robins" in the Wiltshire Regiment. Many thanks.
I just looked there's 46. Late night ahead.

World War One / Another Uniform Puzzle

To my knowledge I have two relatives who served in WW1. One joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In 1916 he was posted to France with 2nd Battalion, Canadian Victoria Rifles and was killed in action in July 1917. The second joined the Royal Ordnance Corps and worked in the ROC workshops in France. At some point he was invalided out, having been injured in a gas attack. I have been given the attached photograph and been told it is one of the above. I'm not sure. Sorry the cap badge is not very clear or is it just a prop for the photo ?

The Lighter Side / Pub Quiz

"Does anyone know the location of this pub/ex-pub? Ashby's was a Staines brewery"
Is a question being asked on another forum and I know it's the type of mystery the Sherlocks on this site might like.
There are lots of pub/brewery sites on 'tinternet but I'm thinking a genealogy mindset could be applied.

Hello Gill,
Yes I've corresponded with Terry, it's all his fault :) He came up with the name Timmis. Dianes' brother Thomas did a DNA test with the company FTDNA which was a perfect match to me. He is a direct male line to Ernest and I a direct line to Arthur which suggests they were full brothers. Hopefully your DNA test will show more matches. Which company did you use? Ancestry,FTDNA,23&me or someone else ? Are they loaded onto GEDmatch ?

You must share DNA with me as Elizabeth Timmis was my great grandmother if she procured Ernest my grandfather.
Ernest was your grandfather and his brother Arthur was my grandfather. Hopefully our combined DNA tests will go some way to finding if Elizabeth Timmis was our shared great grandmother. Which company did you test with ?

I'm just going over old thoughts in the hope someone will pop up and say " Liz, thats my dear old great granny ". It happens :)

  ??? :-\
But the exciting thing is it's another DNA test which might throw some light on our shared concrete wall
