On my Durran family tree I have a Thomas Laurie, born c1802, who married Janet Durran 10 February 1826 in Olrig. They had 8 children including Gilbert, born 1 December 1835 in Durran, Olrig. Thomas died 3 January 1875. I understand that this Thomas was the son of Gilbert Laurie & Jean Macdonald.

Hi,

I recognize this family. Going back in time Annie’s family tree is as follows: -

Annie Nicolson (1894-1962)
James McBeath Nicolson (1858-1946) & Margaret Gunn Sinclair (1849-1928)
William Nicolson (1819-1904) & Isabella Nicol (1820-1890)
John Nicolson (1783-1860) & Anne Bruce (1777-1860)
William Nicolson (c1756- ????) & Esther Bruce
David Nicolson (c1725-1793) & Mary Coghill (1733-????)

I am a direct descendant of David & Mary, who are buried in Bower Cemetery. The inscription is “Over the dust of David Nicolson, farmer in Alterwall, Mary Coghill, his wife. This stone was erected by John Nicolson, their son 1820; In memory of John Nicolson, late farmer, Hollandmake, who departed this life Oct. 20 1846, aged 92 years; and his spouse, Elizabeth Gunn, who departed this life Sep .. 1825, aged 65 years”. John is my 4xgreat grandfather.

Hi Ann,

My Mary Elizabeth was born in Little Broughton in 1874. She was the daughter of William Makemson & Sarah Tolson, who married in Cockermouth in 1869. William was an engine driver, as was the father of Charles Tomlinson, whom Mary Elizabeth married.

I have only one Makemson on my family tree - Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" was born in Bridekirk, Cumberland in 1873. She married my great uncle Charles Simpson Tomlinson in 1895 in Cockermouth, also in Cumberland. Just across the border is Scotland so Lowland Scots seems to fit in.
