London and Middlesex / Re: Richard Washington, Staples Inn, London

Many thanks both for all the information.

I had taken the Henry Washington baptism straight from Family Search without checking the original on Ancestry. So thanks for that Horsleydown. Definitely Southampton Buildings.
Thanks for the links to the Archive sources ShaunJ. I'll have a good look through these.

I've now found the burials of 2 of the children... Elianor at St Marylebone, Westminster on 2 June 1724 aged c. 5 weeks, and Henry at St. Sepulchre, London on 16 July 1719.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Fletchers of Clea Hall in Westward PRs
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

I'm looking for help locating the baptism and burial entries of of John Fletcher of Clea Hall (1695-1756), his wife Isabella Senhouse (1692/93-1774), and their family in the Westward Parish records (Westward in Allerdale below Derwent ward, Cumberland). They were married 1/1/1716-17 and apparently had about 7 sons and 2 daughters?

Any help with this would be appreciated as the Westward records are not on Ancestry, family Search or Freereg.

Many thanks.

London and Middlesex / Richard Washington, Staples Inn, London
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
Wonder if anyone has any information on Richard Washington, son of Henry Washington and Eleanor Harrison, of South Cave, Yorkshire (marr. 7/10/1689). I can find little info on him from online records.

All I know is that he was an attorney at Staples Inn, London a Inn of Chancery and customs house for wool, where he was admitted on 14/2/1717-18.

I think he might be the Richard Washington, Gentleman who with his wife Elizabeth had as least 5 children bap. at St Andrew's Holborn, London: viz. Henry (21/5/1719), Mary (23/2/1722), Elianor (21/4/1724), Robert (25/7/1725) & Elizabeth (2/4/1726-27). Their bap. entries state their home being at Southandon Buildings or Old Southanden Buildings. Could this be Southampton Buildings? It's hard to decipher.

I also found reference to Richard leaving a will where his son William and his daughter Mary are only mentioned. But I can find no trace of this will or it's date.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Nottinghamshire / Re: Newby in Mansfield

Hi Trish,

Many thanks for the information and for helping direct me in the right direction. I had a look at the Earring St Andrews records on Ancestry and managed to find details of some children of Elizabeth Dand and William Mompesson her 2nd husband....
William Mompesson, bap. 1 Feb 1672, buried 19 Nov. 1673
Henry Mompesson, bap. 15 may 1674
There was a marriage of Elizabeth Mompesson & John Raworth, 7 April 1689
and Margaret Mompesson & John Chappell, 29 July 1690

Manage to find records for Mansfield, Notts. on Ancestry after a struggle and found the following...
Elizabeth, dau of Mr Richard Newby, esq. buried 28 Nov. 1656
William, son of Mr Richard Newby buried 3 March 1659-60
2 of Elizabeth's children by 1st husband.

Can anyone help me find the marriage and the baptisms of the family of Richard Newby and his wife Elizabeth Dand.

Richard Newby was bap. at Ingleton, Yorks. in 1633 and married Elizabeth, a daughter of Rowland Dand of Mansfield Woodhouse. They married about 1658 and apparently had about 4 children, Charles, William, Elizabeth and Eleanor before Richard died in 1664 (an online source says he was buried in St. Edmund King and Martyr, Mansfield Woodhouse, co. Notts. 10 October 1664, but not sure how accurate this is).

Elizabeth subsequently married St Peter & St Paul, Mansfield, co. Notts. 4 May 1669, Rev. William Mompesson, rector of Eyam, Derby and had, I think, 4 further children. She was apparently bur. at bur. St Andrew’s, Eakring, co. Notts. 10 March 1694-95.

Any help appreciated. Thanks you.

Many thanks again Arthurk.

I haven't looked in FindMyPast as yet. I only have Ancestry and there is no sign of a marriage for Henry & Eleanor.

However I had a breakthrough today. I found the probate for Eleanor's youngest son William Newby (bap. Bingley 21 August 1636). The will was dated 5 Oct. 1656, and the probate at London 3 Nov. 1658.

In it he left £500 to his nephew William Newby (presumably one of Richard's sons?), named as Executor, his loving cousin Mr Rowland Dand of Mannsfield Woodhouse, co. Nottingham (Father or brother of Richard's wife, Elizabeth And??), and as witnesses Richard Newby (elder brother?), Elianor Currer (mother?) and Elianor Walker (?cousin).

There is a burial for a Mr William Newby at St Saviour's, York, co. Yorks. 8 October 1658

I'm keen to find out who Eleanor Walker was. There was a supposed marriage between one of Eleanor's sister to a Mr Walker of Gawthorpe Hall, Bingley. But again no sign of this anywhere.

Many thanks Ciderdrinker and Arthurtk for all the great information you've posted. They have clarified and highlighted quite a few issues and directed me in other possible directions.
Apologies for the slight delay in replying but I wanted to pull a few things together from the info you sent to try and clarify Eleanor's marriages and children if possible.

So far I have Eleanor (b. Ingleton 1613), marr. 1st Ingleton 1632 William Newby of Barwick and Draughton, bap. Skipton 1614, bur. Bingley 1636, and had at least 3 children between 1632 & 1636 -

1. Richard Newby, bap. Ingleton 1633, from the Familiae Minorum he marr. before 1660 Elizabeth Dand (b. 1634), died before 1669 when she married interestingly William Mompwesson, rector Eyam, famous for isolating and protecting that village during the plague. Lots online about him. They would appear to have Charles who grad. from Peterhouse College, William, Elizabeth & Eleanor who all died without issue.

2. Robert Newby, bap. Skipton 1634-35. I found his burial at Bingley 30 March 1636

3. William Newby, bap. Bingley 31 Aug 1636. I have no further info on him.

Eleanor is then supposed to have marr. Henry Currer of Kildwick, and of Gawthorpe Hall, north of Bingley. West Yorks. (purchased by him from the Walkers c. 1645, till its sale in 1668 to Robert Benson, father of the first Lord of Bingley). Henry Currer dates are b. 1587, d. 1653-4 and he marr. Anne Wilkinson in 1635. I found Ann's burial at Kildwick 12 Nov. 1646 (the Anne Currer bur. 4 Jan. 1644-45 was her infant daughter), and there were the following baptism records after this date.

1. Henry Currer, bap. All Saints, Bingley 27 June 1647, son of Henry Currer, gent. borne att Draughton
2. Eleanor Currer, bap. Bingley 27 February 1648-49, bur. 5 February 1650-51  (dau. of Henery Currer de Gathorppe, Gent)
3. Katherine Currer, bap. Bingley 17 April 1650, bur. Bingley 29 December 1650  (dau. of Henery Currer de Gathorppe, Gent)
4. Marie Currer, bap. Bingley 20 April 1651  (dau. of Henery Currer de Gathorppe, Gent)
5. Elizabeth, bap. Bingley 10 April 1656  (dau. of Henery Currer de Gathorppe, Gent)

My feeling is that the Skipton Currer's were probably related but not this particular family.

My problem is that the Henry Currer (1587-1653-4) that Eleanor is supposed to marry is a lot older (26 years), and I wonder if she actually married a younger Henry Currer. There is a Henry Currer, son of William and Grace, bap. Kildwick 17 April 1614 who is nearer her in age.
However there is no marriage record to prove anything one way or the other!!

Ciderdrinker. You mentioned a burial - Eleanor w. of Henry Currer of Bingley buried 26.7.1662 at Bingley.

Do you know if the w. is for wife or widow. If she had married the elder Henry C. who died 1653-4, she would be the widow.

Could you possible do me a favour and check if the record says wife or widow?

Eleanor must have married Henry Currer between Nov. 1646 (Anne's death) and June 1647 (young Henry's bap.)

Many thanks again to both for all your help.

Thanks all for identifying the Bingley Gawthorpe! I was getting quite confused as there is another Gawthorpe Hall associated with the Gascoigne family.

This one in the Bingley district is correct as the baptism and burial entries for Ellenor Currer (1647-50) state her father to be 'Henery Currer de Gathorppe, Gent'. who seems to have purchased the estate from the Walkers.

Online sources are a bit confusing and wrong I think. They state that Frances Lowther married Wm Newby and Henry Currer and her sister Eleanor marr. a Mr Walker of Gawthorpe. However the records definitely show Eleanor marr. Wm Newby and I think Henry Currer.
I'm trying to find out if Frances made a connection with the Walkers of Gawthorpe, which seems to have been passed around between the families.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Walker family of Gawthorpe Hall
« on: Friday 21 July 23 08:26 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information of the Walker family who bought Gawthorpe Hall in 1596 (by Anthony Walker).

I'm trying to identify that a Frances Lowther (born and bap. Ingleton 1612, daughter of William Lowther of Ingleton), married "a Mr Walker of Gawthorpe".

I can find barely anything online, except the following:

The Walkers were an old local family, and had been living at Bingley from at least the time of Edward III. They gradually acquiring property at Bingley before Anthony Walker purchased Gawthorpe Hall in 1596. He probably built the that the present Gawthorpe Hall. Anthony married in 1580 Agnes Wooller, in 1580 (possibly a connection of the William Wooller, who in 1597 left 50 for the purchase of an estate in Bingley for the benefit of the poor).

There was also an Anthony Walker, of Gilstead, clerke, who died in 1607. The Walkers were living at Gawthorpe Hall in 1634, and they sold the estate and manor to Henry Currer (grandson of Hugh Currer, of Marley), who resided at Gawthorpe in 1654, if not up to its sale in 1668. To confuse things this Henry Currer was probably the 2nd husband of Frances sister Eleanor Lowther, widow of William Newby.

If anyone can help I'd be grateful.
