My Gt Grandmother always said there was room for one more - the illegitimate son of her daughter, the grandchildren from a first marriage not wanted by a second husband etc.

There were either taken in by family or went to the workhouse or other institution.

If the name at the bottom is the same as the one crossed out then it looks like the registrar was writing Lane - no room for a longer word.
BUT I think the bottom word looks like one long word.

It looks like Lanespire but I'm not sure that is a surname  ???

The marriage entry for William Hadlow & Frances Mercer is available to view online

page 4

There is lots of information to be found on the Hadlow family on the Snodland Historical Society website

Click on genealogy -> Snodland parishioners -> date required

Also look under documents -> download names from overseers accounts  1769 - 1800

I can only see one Frances Hadlow, the wife of William.  She was buried 17th January 1841 so will not be on the 1841 census.

added:  It looks likely that John was the illegitimate son of Frances Mercer. This John had a middle name of Crowhurst, perhaps his father's name  ???

There was a notice to say the site would no longer be maintained due to the owner's ill health. Options were being investigated to see if it could be taken over. Perhaps that came to nothing.

You can still access it via the wayback machine

It's a very useful website.

Just adding that some of the research I was involved is not available.

I hadn't got round to watching the beginning of the episode on i-player so thanks to the link I watched it on You Tube.

I didn't know Josh's surname.

Josh and my OH might be related  :o

They both share the Hannaford & Widdicombe surnames.  Common names around the moor though.

Shame they didn't investigate that side of the family.  I expect they did but it wasn't anywhere near as interesting.

Parishes would often pay for the passage of those who were 'a burden on the parish'.
