Dorset / Re: A Dorset highwayman??

Thank you for your interesting replies.  I had no idea there was a capital punishment website!
I will check it for his surname , which is quite unusual, outside Dorset.

I will check the local OPC information in the surrounding districts, too.
Shame no census returns then, I may have been able to find him living in one of his children's households elsewhere later, but never mind.

Very disappointed our latest census not available freely, what a shame for all us family tree nuts!

best regards

Dorset / A Dorset highwayman??
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

One of  my ancestors, Joseph Jesse, was born 1726 in Burlstone, Dorset. He married Mary Arnold in 1753 in Chesebourne, Dorset. Believe they had 3 children, by 1755.
It is a story in the family that he was hanged as a highwayman c. 1755!

Believe buried 10.10.1757

Can anyone substantiate this story, and the above facts for me?
Am struggling to find anything else on him.
Many thanks

Hello, Harlem and also others who have an interest in Trengoffe Manor, Warleggan.

I have attached a couple of photos that I was given some time ago now, when I was researching my own family in the area, it is now ok for me to post them.

I hope that they will be of interest to those of you who have requested them from me and for whatever reason have not received the photos, or those would simply like to see them.
Apologies for not being able to post the photographs before now.

kind regards

Hello,
and thank you for posting on the above subject.  Still interested to hear anything about this, as it all helps to build up the picture.

My maternal grandparents continued to manage pubs for some years at least up to the first World War.  My mother was born in 1914 in the Meadfoot Inn in Torquay, for example.  They then moved to small shops on the south coast, ending up in Margate having both a shop and a b & b.

Thanks again for contacting.
Regards.

Europe / Re: Rome, or London?

Hello

I realised that, as my relative was born late in the year it could have been registered the first quarter of the following year, and up it came!  Registered in England, as we thought.

So topic finished.  Thanks for your assistance, once again .....
Best regards.

Europe / Rome, or London?
« on: Sunday 12 January 20 14:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hope this query is allowed, if not please advise.

My cousin died in Italy in December just gone.  I need to find her birth record.  We thought she may have been born in London, but my enquiry on BMD doesn't show it.  Its possible she was born in Rome.

Can you help me find her record?  I have her birth and death dates.

thank you very much.

World War Two / Re: US Navy? Mystery gentleman with distinctive arm badge

Thank you for your reply, and having looked at your web link, I see just what you mean!

The notes on the reverse of the photo yielded nothing of value, as the photo studio went out of business some years ago.  I think I will have to close my enquiries about this officer - he wasn't a relative, but it has been an interesting little project for me.

If I could, I would have liked to thank this gentleman for his service during the war, and can only hope that he returned to his family safe and sound.  He looked like a nice guy.

A happy New Year to you all, and indeed to everyone on Rootschat.

Best regards.

Thank you for your replies.  My father's family were Royal Navy men, so this is of great interest to me.
My ancestor was a teacher in London during WW2, and said she met this gentleman there.

Don't know about the medal ribbons, could this give an indication of his length of service and theatres he was serving in?

On the reverse of the photograph is a serial number, will see what I can glean about that, too.  It may just be a photo reference, but will try......

Thanks so much for your interest.

Regards.
