Family History Beginners Board / Re: Captain Orry COWIN of Mauritius
« on: Tuesday 09 October 18 13:14 BST (UK)  »
I have a photo of a large house called The Anchorage and five people around it. One is John Cowin, one L Cowin, one T J Cowin and one M M Cowin. John & L appear to be parents/inlaw to TJ and MM. There is also a young boy in the centre, apparently called Hugh Goold? Are these the same family?

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: skoulding look up request

According to census and her death record, she was born in Aslacton in 1819. There is a Daniel & Elizabeth Woodcraft who seem quite likely candidates but no concrete evidence.

They married, as I suggested, in Tivetshall St Mary on 21st October 1840. As suspected, Elizabeth was Elizabeth Woodcraft.

Thomas appears to have been baptised in TSM on 30 Aug 1818, son of James & Ann. He was an agricultural labourer in every census, right up to 1891 when he was 72. He appears to have died in 1900 aged 83.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: The Times wants your views: DNA ethnicity results
« on: Wednesday 03 February 16 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
As I have been researching my family history since 1977, I have been extremely interested in any developments in the research world over those years and DNA was one thing which I wanted to look at when it was first introduced for family history. I took the test and found that it did very little to pint me in any direction but I can see that it could be a great tool for those who moved from an area, to find out where they originated from.

All of my ancestors so far discovered, have been from within fifty miles of where I live today and, as a real local, with a paper trail as well as a DNA test, I feel that my DNA could be extremely useful for those looking to find where their ancestors came from in England. I'd love to be looked at in detail, to see if my DNA could tell the scientists anything. Also, as both of my parents are still alive, I imagine their DNA could also be of great interest too. (My Mother's DNA will have information in it which I haven't got.)

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: marriage & baptism lookup please - Barford

FreeReg is free and the search can be taken down to parish if you like. I usually limit it to the County as there are so many parishes in Norfolk. (We have over 700 Medieval Churches in our beautiful County!) You could also search other free sources for the area, as there are many.
