Westmorland / Re: WHARTON / BELL / ATKINSON Families 1800's
« on: Sunday 19 August 18 22:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Barbara,
I'd all but given up on this branch of the family. Yes, Richard and Ann were siblings....the 2 oldest of 7 children I believe. Aside from names and DOB, I have little information on Ann's siblings. I'm not sure if she was the only one to come to Australia. She died in 1928 and is buried in Perth. Her husband Henry died in 1905 in Newcastle. Unfortunately I've never seen any photographs. They also had 7 children. All of the boys went into the railway as did Henry in Australia.
I believe I have a couple more generations for Ann's paternal side and possibly back to 1600 in one branch on her maternal side.
Prior to leaving for Australia, someone in Ann's family gave her a house plaque handmade from brass reading ESTON. Ann was living in Eston when she married Henry. The plaque has adorned several family homes over the years in Australia. My farm is called Estonvale….and the plaque is one of my favourite possessions.
Would love to swap notes. PM me and we can go from there. Thanks so much for the post!!

World War Two / Re: Changi POW

Hello Stuart,
You certainly test the memory!! I'm afraid I can give little further information to what I listed in my initial post. I recall the chap that I purchased it from was not sure if William was Australian or English. He knew enough to be certain the box was made in Changi. I can no longer remember why this even came up at the sale and don't recall there was a relationship between William and the salesman, though I very much doubt family would relinquish such a piece of their history. There's something in the back of my mind that William had no family...but I can't be sure anymore. The sale was in Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia.
I started searching on a William Benyon Boyes that died in NSW in April 2009 as it may have fit with an estate sale, however I never confirmed if he was ever in Changi.
The box is now long gone, given as a gift.....with the history as known at the time included.
Kind regards,
Jeff

Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: Hardie, Stewart, Arklay Family 1800's

Howdy,
"peter hardie born 1876, mains forar, scotland.
death 22 august 1915, is my gggrandfather.
I am trying to find information on his parents Peter Hardie 1847-1885 and Elizabeth Stewart HARDIE.(ARKLAY) and yes he died in scotland not sure where".

I feel sure Peter Hardie b. 1876 to Peter & Elizabeth Stewart Hardie (nee Arklay) came to Australia with his parents in 1878. He's listed on Elizabeth's death certificate in 1883. Peter Snr died in a mining accident in Kiama in 1885. Peter jnr died on 28/8/1915 in Gallipoli. His service record is available as I purchased it.

Hi Roger,
Ah....that skeleton is out of the closet now!! Yes, John & Mary Magdaline married in 1905. Her father Thomas signed consent on the certificate as she was only 20. Unusual marriage though and 37 years difference in age. Lore has it that it tore the family apart - some for, some against the marriage. On Thomas McCabe's death certificate there is no mention of his daughter Mary Magdaline. Obviously Thomas' son (and Mary Magdaline's brother) Robert (the informant) was one of the ones against as he would have supplied his siblings names for the death registration.

There was one child (our line). Mary Ellen McCabe (known as Nell) was born in Marrickville in 1907. She married Augustus Allan Hardie (a Urunga boy) in 1923. Mary Ellen died in 1992 and was buried in Mullumbimby, however there is no marker on the grave. I know of one photo of mother and daughter (Mary M & Mary E) together and I have a later photo of Mary Ellen as well. PM me your email if you'd like copies.

Hi there Roger,

'Chinka' sent me a dozen or so delightful old photos some time ago, including one of Thomas & Harriett. If I read it correctly I think it says from Solomon Studio in the bottom right section. You'll soon work out who Chinka is....I believe she has left a message for you after your post went up. Bellinger Valley - such a pretty place. You're lucky to live there!!

Hi there Kim, great to read your post! I'll be happy to help you break a big hole in that brick wall. I am Len's son and your grandmother Lily was my favourite aunt. As a child I loved visiting her and Uncle Jim in that wonderful house - such a pity it burnt down. I am in contact with the cousins you mention and will give you their details too. Have some old family photos too. So glad you found me (us). This site has helped me so much over the years. Jeff

Hi there Brian,

Apologies for the late reply. I've been away from this branch of the family for some time now. Grand information re Mary Ellena Murphy. Thank you so much for supplying it. You've straightened my mind on the workings of that part of the tree. Many new names that I've not come across before. This is a BIG family!!

Mary FINN just kept on going didn't she?

I would strongly suggest you contact a wonderful woman on rootschat (if you haven't already) - Chinka. She has commented on this topic in the past. She's much more closely related to you and I'm sure you two will have a lot to talk about.

If I come across anything new I'll certainly post the information.

All the best,
Jeff

Australia / Re: Lookup - 'Jamberoo Cemeteries NSW' booklet - Thomas HAMPTON
« on: Monday 25 February 13 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for your thoughts and ideas of how to move forward in finding Thomas. I've tried the lot previously to no avail. The Kiama FH people have been very patient with me over the years as well. I've spent days trawling through name variations on BDM. I had hoped that even though the period was just shy of the legal requirement to register the information, as Menzies was involved, he may have registered the death himself. Alas....it doesn't seem so. The inquests for that area/time are not available (who knows, they may be in someones attic). The church archives do not have records for that period. Their advice was that there were either no deaths in the area at that time or the Church did not send their documents to the archives. The CofE rectory burnt down in 1927 taking most (if not all) of their early records. I've gone through dozens of fiche reels over the years. My gut feeling is that Thomas is buried on private land. My other gut feeling is that if Menzies' notes were available there would be some information in there. Both he and his wife were methodical diary writers. The search continues....

Thanks again,
Jeff
