Devon / WARREN family of Ashburton
« on: Tuesday 27 March 12 11:48 BST (UK) »
To anyone who might be able to assist, My family Warren came from Ashburton, Devon at sometime just after the religious turmoil of the 1640's. According to the Reverend Thomas Warren [History of the Warren Family] John Warren [a Parish Clerk at Marnhull, Dorset] came to Dorset about 1680 with his son John [Born 1658] and held the post of Parish Clerk at Marnhull until his death in January 1698/99?
The Dorset records office confirmed his death and burial at that time but could not confirm his work. I do know that his son John [b1658] became Parsi Clerk after him and he was followed by his son Christopher about 1750 or perhaps a little earlier, [John the younger died 1752]. Christopher married and had a son Martin [b1733] who died about 1780 of smallpox. He had a son also named Christopher who migrated to Southampton about 1780-89 and his first son Uriah was born there in 1790. The family were also Stone Masons from about 1680 and continued in that trade right up until Christopher [b 1768] died in Southampton about 1830.
My look up request may be too difficult but here goes; I need to know if John Warren b 1617 at Ashburton was the Parish clerk who came to Marnhull. If he is the one, his father would be Christopher Warren [b1585] and mother would be Alice Webb [married 1613]. His older brother would have been Robert Warren [Clerk and Rector of Maker and Rame in Cornwall] who was born in 1615 and who died in 1668 at Rame and who is buried in the church at that village. The Reverend Thomas Warren got his information on my family from the Reverend John Hutchins who also wrote his own history of Devon and Dorset. Hutchins gleaned his information on the Ashburton Warren family from the Reverends Harry and Conyers Place who were resident in Marnhull at that time and they probably were able to pass the information on direct from Christopher Warren [son of John the younger married Ruth] who was Parish Clerk at the time of Hutchins visit.
The only way I can see that proof could be forthcoming, is by finding out where the 81 year-old John Warren [b1617] came from and when he arrived in Marnhull. I have exhausted Marnhull completely and well know every Warren family [and their dogs] from 1561 to 1780. The proof I need is that John born of Christopher and Alice in 1617 is the correct trail.
