Thanks Mort29  :) I shall save that somewhere safe for future reference!

Family History Beginners Board / Census Reference info

Sorry to be dim - I'm still fairly new to this.

Where do I find the Census Reference Number?  I'm looking at an original 1871 entry and can't see anything that looks like anything I should quote.  I've asked for help to trace some one on the Traveller section but don't know how to reference the census entries I've mentioned.

Thanks
maggie

Travelling People / Selina Smith b1850 West Country
« on: Monday 31 May 10 04:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I'm hoping some one can help me as this is driving me nuts!

I'm trying to find the marriage of Selina Smith to John Herving/Irving, also her siblings and parents.

I've traced her through her children/grandchildren on the censuses back to 1871 (wrongly transcribed as Hewing) lodging with several other Licensed Hawkers at Edward Rose's Lodging Houses in Ladds Lane, Chippenham.  At least, I think it's her - no first names are given for her or her 2yr old daughter, but mentions husband John and son William.  There's also a huge blot over her age.

Her place of birth changes between Trowbridge, Bath, Bradford on Avon.

I've also found a subsequent marriage in 1892 for a Selina to John Henry Hurn, listed on Wiltshire BMD, which gives her previous names as Smith and Irving.

I found her children that I know of on Wiltshire BMD (as Irving, but seems to change to Hervin(g) later on) which gave their mum's name as Smith.

I'm wondering whether she married some one else before John, which would explain why I can't find her.  I feel like I've looked everywhere!

Hope some one can help - thanks.

Thanks for all your help, everyone, lots to think about and I like the idea of having CDs so that I can search offline.

Also Somerset OPC is brilliant, I wish I had the patience and dedication of those transcribers.

Thanks again

Well, having got my free trial to the Genealogist, I'm not too sure about it.  I'm currently having a poke around Find My Past, and thanks for letting me know that Ancestory's been having problems.

Thanks Guy, forgot that the library might subscribe to Ancestory.  Unfortunately, family can't offer much hard evidence, but have great stories.  BTW just spotted you on another forum re the Northern Genealogist - looks interesting for when I get round to those from 'up north'.

Has anyone come across the sets of CDs by My Censuses?

Thank you all so much for your help.

Nanny Jan:  thanks for looking him up and giving the link - that site's really useful.  I was hoping to put off actually ordering anything from GRO for the moment as my list is already quite long!

Nell: you're a star!  Now it's much easier for me sort out my other Leaches (if you see what I mean) as one household has 16 of them over three generations.  As for Robert being a Retired Farmer, I thnk Sardine would be more appropriate!

Nick 29:  that's the conclusion I almost reached but wasn't sure - there's so much out there - so thanks for helping me make up my mind.  The Genealogist has the best reviews, as has a free trial at the moment (but only 10 credits) so I think I might give that a go and if it looks any good, go for the Personal Premium for £68.95, which is credit free.

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate it.

Hi Nell and thanks for the welcome, and thanks also for the nudge to be more organised with my info!  Sorry not to be more specific.

I'm trying to trace my great grandfather's family - Edwin Taylor Leach born 1854 East Chinnock, Yeovil, died 1936 Dorset.  I've got marriage details, and census info on him for 1861/71/81/91/1901 and know rest of household, but not relationship for the 1861/71/81 census, so can't verify parents, siblings etc.

That would be just the start!

As I mentioned before, this part of the family's huge; I wouldn't expect to rely on the kindness of people to do constant look-ups for me, which is why I was wondering whether I should just buy something - a subscription, or a census CD or something.  I'm just not sure what I'd get.

Sorry to have waffled on.

Family History Beginners Board / Where to spend my money

Hi everyone

I started my family tree research just over a week ago, concentrating on just the one branch.  I seem to have got as far as I can (1795) with free searches, parish records and message boards, and now need to spend some money to sort out exactly who's who, where etc.  The family's huge.

I know eventually I'll need GRO certificates, but I need info before I get there, and can't work out whether I need to pay to look at an index, look at a record, download a document, camp at a records office  .....

I know the info's out there, and lots of it, just not sure of the best way to go about it .

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - maggie

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Workhouse, Church Street, Heathfield.

Hi Stovepipe

It should be possible to select only the frame containing the particular page on the Workhouses website by right-clicking on it.  In my browser (Firefox) I then select 'This Frame / Show Only This Frame'.
It's then easy to get a direct link by copying from the address bar...

PS - It's pure co-incidence that the Ipswich Workhouse was called "Heathfields"; the one Sue wants was in Sussex not Suffolk.
Thanks for that.  I'm new to this forum and to genealogy, but I'll make sure I check my facts before posting again.  Geography's not my strong point.
