Longford / Re: Same family of Percivals in Longford and Leitrim
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone, So, 29 years after I started enquiring about my Percival family from my English uncle Robert Percival FRCS FRCOG we are no further along the road to discovering where our Percival family originated.  I am now 77 and need to deal with this.
I suspect that John b.1795(?) was at least second generation in Ireland.
Ancestry DNA relates me to all of you Neil, Amanda, Larry, Bill's wife and perhaps others and between us I think we have a very comprehensive tree since 1815
It would appear that many of the Percival men were RIC, some were tenant farmers. One was a bog ranger(a bit disappointing),a postmaster, bailiff.
They were protestant.
Did they arrive in the military?
Did they come with some planted landowner?
Were they Scots or English originally?
Unfortunately DNA on Ancestry only goes back to John's generation as far as I can see so I don't have any Percival matches from any earlier people.
What do we do next?
I'm almost at the point of calling in an expert to help.  Does anyone else want to be involved in this?
I think I'm crowd sourcing here!
Who do we approach?
Anyway I'd like to hear opinions

Hi, Im the one who visited the aunts in Mobil!!
My goodness this discussion has been going on for years.  Ne w people enter into the discussion but don't seem to read all that has gone before.
John Percival and Anne Rosemond had a child Arthur in 1828.  He emigrated to NSW and had a string of Children with an Australian born wife. His brother Henry came out to NSW too but returned and died in Dublin after marrying for the second time.
It is fairly easy to follow the Rosemonds.
I am guessing that John's father was Alexander who was a constable in the RIC
Why?  Because the dates fit, the area fits and Johns first son was called Alexander.
I have done my DNA and have connections with three siblings of Arthur Percival b.1828. They are Thomas, Elizabeth and Alexander.
I have been to the cemetery in Drunshambo and seen John's Headstone. It's very difficult to read but has been transcribed. Nowhere can I find where he was born and to whom!!!! As I have stated before I have been working on the for over 25 years.  I felt DNA would hold the answers but not yet.  If you are related to these Percival please get your DNA done by Ancestry.Com. The more connections the further back we may one day go!
Patrick Perceval's daughter of the Temple House family has had her DNA done and isn't a match with me or Amanda Michalia(Thomas's great grand daughter).
What more can we do?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is any help but I'm also an aussie. My G Grandfather came to Australia in 1863 and settled in Castlemaine. He was the son of James Cock and Honour Odgers and he was born in St Gluvias, Penryn in 1834.  James was the son of Edward Bolitho Cock and Ann Saunders.Their children were James b. 1802, Ann b. 1800,William b 1805, another Ann b. 1808 and Elizabeth b.1812
Does this help?

We really need to know the names of his children to see if they link in with our Percivals.

I'm the one who visited the aunts in Mohill.  It was 2001.  I met Kathleen Boyle and her sister Margaret and sister Ivy.They also had a brother Alexander, a doctor in Galway.  They are sadly all dead now.  They were the children of John Percival ,son of Thomas ,son of John P and Ann Rosemond.

I have been studying these Percivals of Leitrim and Longford for 25 years.   It is so difficult to follow all the links on roots chat isn't it.  I am sure we are not related to the Percevals of Sligo though they kindly had my cousin and me to lunch back in 2002.  I have had my DNA done and so has Patrick Perceval, both through Ancestry.com  There doesn't appear to be a connection.I have traced the variuos children of John P and Anne Rosemond.  Arthur ended up in NSW. Alexander married Dunbar,Elizabeth married a McCormack,William I can't trace.....may have gone to US,Thomas married an Irwin,Henry married a cousin Frances and later Selina Stephenson in Dublin.  They are all accounted for.
Going backwards we have to do some research into Alexander and John who were both constables.  I don't no where to turn next to find out where they came from
Any ideas?
BTW I was the one who visited some relatives in Ireland.  Kathleen and Ivy in Mohill.   They are both gone now.  They knew much about the family but the only thing they could tell me about their grand father John was that he was some sort of sheriff in the district who could take away people's homes and was therefore not liked a lot. I suppose he was a constable too and a farmer.  Kathleen and Ivy had a brother Alexander who was a doctor.  I suspect he might be dead too.

Dear Christopher and Hallmark, thank you so much for all the information you have put up.   I will go through it over the weekend ( Melbourne Cup long weekend here!!!).  It was so kind of you and I'm sure some of them will be related to us....I hope.
I looked at the list from Dublin but sadly no mention of birth of Alexander or John.
I've been working on this for 25 years.  Somewhere out there is an answer to where we came from before Ireland.  I know the first Percival seemed to come over with William the Conquerer but that's a lot of years unaccounted for!
