Family History Beginners Board / Re: Does a death certificate have a maiden name on it?
« on: Saturday 21 January 06 17:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not too sure how common this would be - however; I've received a copy of a Death Certificate through today from 1861.
Under 'Occupation' - it lists "Daughter of..."
So this could be another valuable source of information.

Richard

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: West Mersea Parish Lookup - Shepherd Marriage
« on: Saturday 21 January 06 00:10 GMT (UK)  »
I'm extremely grateful for the trouble you've gone to to pull this information together for me.

At first glance, the only area which seems to marry up with what I've had confirmed so far is this element:

36      1825 Jan 30  William         Susan SHEPHARD BB  born 29 Aug
                                                                                               1824

However, this does indicate an alternative spelling of the surname - so this is an interesting avenue to persue.

Thanks very much indeed.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / West Mersea Parish Lookup - Shepherd Marriage
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 00:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm wondering if someone could be kind enough to assist me with some conflicting information.

According to the various census returns, Susanna Shepherd (Born West Mersea 1801) had 4 children, although she was listed as 'unmarried' on each census.

I've obtained a marriage cert for one of her children, William Shepherd, who has a father recorded on the certificate as 'William Mayer' (or that is how it appears anyway)

According to the IGI - William Shepherd's parentage is listed as father being 'Unknown Shepherd' and mother being 'Susannah (Surname not listed); however the father information has a year of birth - and there is also a marriage date for the pair of them listed as 1824.

I was hoping that someone may be able to assist me with some clarification on this issue, by way of checking relevant parish records for West Mersea?

As an additional, I have recently ordered a copy of Susannah's death certificate, in the hope that some light may be shed on the conundrum.

Many Thanks

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / 1851 Census Lookup (or alternative suggestion) please
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I received my first disappointing copy of a Marriage Certificate through the post today - in fact, more sad than disappointing.

I'm trying to track the parentage of 'William Shepherd' and 'Ann Davis' who were married 30 July 1853.

My initial confusion is that William's father is listed on the certificate as William Majer (this could be Mayer or Major) - would this be his actual name, or is this a 19th Century version of 'senior' - indicating that their names were the same?

The other strange fact is that Ann Davis' father is listed as ____ Davis (Christian Name Unknown) - Labourer, does this really mean that Ann's mother had a liason with someone she only knew as a Mr Davis - or could there be another explanation do you think ?

They both were living in a workhouse in West Mersea at the time of their marriage - I was wondering if anyone would be able to perform a check of the 1851 Census for the West Mersea area to see if they were both living with parents / others at this point which could help me.

In 1851 - William would have been 26 and Ann 22 (although Mann at this point may have been in Sussex, which may complicate matters)

As a help, I have a hint that William's mother's name may have been 'Susannah' - but this is unconfirmed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Richard

Sorry about that - my mistake.

Essie was 24 on the 1881 Census, born in approx 1857.  She married a John Dickaty in 1876 - registration district Dover, however she spent her married life in the Hampshire area.

Thanks

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Help with 'John Dickety' - the early years
« on: Thursday 09 December 04 19:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking to track dowm both the birth (and parentage) and 1871 census information for JOHN DICKETY - according to all later census returns, born in Overton, Hampshire.

I have tried the usual suspects (Ancestry & FreeBMD), but not having much joy with anything earlier than 1881 - which listed him as being 34 and living in an army barracks with his wife & children.

I have found another John Dickety from the 1871 census, but the age is a couple of years out, and the birth location is listed as 'Southampton'.

If anyone can offer any help or suggestion, I would be very grateful.

Thanks
Richard
