New Zealand Completed Requests / Weedall
« on: Sunday 01 February 09 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone could help with any information on members of my family who emigrated from the UK to New Zealand in 1922 ?
They were Herbert Weedall and his wife Margaret nee Stewart, both born 1882 in Preston, Lancashire. They had 2 daughters who's names I do not know but born in NZ, 1 stayed in NZ but the other went to Australia.
Margaret died 17 August 1960 in Auckland.
Regards, Ken Staveley.

This all seems to have got very complicated, a case of how people define the term "name collecting". My definition is the collecting of names and dates etc; without doing any research, simply taking all the details without any research whatsoever.
As I said previously, my complete tree taken twice from Genes without my permission (only to look).
I totally admit that my tree has lots of second and third cousins and their families, in total I have just under 600 names but every single one has been fully researched including those given to me. This has taken me almost 6 years, so surely it is no wonder that I get annoyed at people simply stealing my work, with I might add no little expense to myself.

My, my Cats Ears, I've struck a nerve there haven't I ? But I stand by what I said.
Taking something without asking is stealing in my book.

I agree with IgorStrav, I have experienced exactly the same thing and I removed my entire tree from Genes. I have now put it back but in a very abridged way.
The last one to do it has more than 53 thousand names in his tree yet he took all the names and dates belonging to both of my late wives, and only removed the "living" names after a very strong complaint.
Name collecting may be the correct term but I prefer thief.

The Common Room / Re: Old Christian Names

Hi,
I have a different slant on names which you might find interesting. My grandmother's christian names were Alberta Williams ******* with no named father, and I suspect that her names could be those of the father ie: Albert Williams. Later my grandmother gave birth to an illegitimate daughter and her name was Ernestine. Could the father have been Ernest ?

Westmorland Lookup Requests / Loughrigg, Ambleside address wanted.
« on: Tuesday 12 August 08 19:41 BST (UK)  »

My great, great grandfather Henry Staveley was born in 1796 at -
"Edinbergh" or "Edinburgh" or a similar name,
              Loughrigg,
              Ambleside,
              Westmorland.
I know where Loughrigg is but can anyone help by telling me exactly where "Edinbergh", "Edinburgh" or "Edenburgh" is. Was it a single house or a hamlet ?

Hi Andrea,
Thats the place you have it spot on, and thanks for the telephone number. I'm away most of today but will ring asap.
I rent the cottage but my landlord has no interest whatsoever in things historical. It has been suggested that the cottage was built in the mid 1600s and even if that isn't quite spot on the place must have some history.
This past month the owner of High Sprint Gill just up the road has been over from Switzerland on holiday but I only managed to speak to him once. He lived at High Sprint for many years and has all the history of that cottage, and he has promised to look through his records when he gets home (left this morning I think).
He thought that the barn had been originally intended to be a house, but for some reason didn't turn out that way. I wondered if it hadn't been the manse for the chapel that you mention. If the Methodists have manses that is.
My ancestors (Staveley) lived in the area from Cautley through to Dent all through the 1800s so wouldn't it be great to discover that they had lived here at some time ?
The Ravenstonedale area goes as far as the Rawthey bridge about a mile down the road towards Sedbergh. And yes the views are brilliant, looking out to Wild Boar Fell.
I do have the book "The History and Traditions of Ravenstonedale" by Rev. W. Nicholls, but there isn't a lot in it about this part.

On reflection my last message was rather abrupt. If you could advise me on how to go about getting a death certificate ie; Where from and what cost etc.
