Hi Bookbox

Thank you so much for that information.   I'll get on to it tomorrow.

Kent / Kent County Asylum
« on: Tuesday 21 November 23 23:15 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there are any records available for this Asylum and, if so, where I might access them please?
I have tried the Lunacy Patients Admission Registers on Ancestry and not found the person I am looking for.
I have a digital copy of his death registration, which shows he died in the Kent County Asylum in 1894.
Many thanks,
Diana

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry SideView Technology to be Extended
« on: Friday 07 October 22 13:34 BST (UK)  »
I've now found several instances where matches I share with my brother say 'maternal' one side and 'paternal' the other.   This is extremely unlikely.   In the cases where I don't know which is correct I'd like to be able to unassign them but that doesn't seem to be an option.

Also, whilst I know we're dealing with a machine I really resent it flagging up in red that our maternal 1st cousin must really be a paternal match - and just in case anyone's wondering if it's possible all our other matches give a lie to it.

I think for the sake of my blood pressure I'm just going to have to ignore this new feature.

For me the relationships are mainly correct (as far as I can see so far) but I have found one whopper.   I've also found an instance on my brother's results where they've wrongly assigned 'paternal' and I can't change it because the 'maternal' option isn't offered.

I think it would help if it said eg 'Parent 1' and 'Maternal'.   My poor brain won't remember which is which after I've checked a few matches and updated notes.

I suppose it's early days and hopefully it will improve.   A chromosome browser would have been so much more useful.   I can't understand Ancestry's unwillingness to install the feature.

I would appreciate some help in how to print a family tree I have created on Legacy.   I want it to look like a tree, with all the branches and twigs.   I've managed to find how to print family groups that look like the screens but that isn't a tree.   Am I being stupid?   A tree should be able to look like a tree, surely!

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1865 marriage at St. Mark's Church, Nottingham

It looks like I need more info on both marriages.   It will have to wait until I'm next able to go to Nottingham and look everything up for myself...

Many thanks for your help.

Samuel James BRAMMAN was the half brother of my great grandmother.   He was born in 1839, parents John BRAMMAN & Senna KING, and married Matilda Ann HINDLEY.   Senna died and John BRAMMAN acquired a second 'wife' Eliza HOLLINGWORTH, who is my 2 x great grandmother.  That is the family you found in 1851 and I have them all documented. The spelling of the surname varied and was sometimes recorded as BRAMMER.    For instance I found Samuel and Matilda as James & Matilda BRAMMER in 1861.   I know they're the right people because the children tally with their birth registrations.

The Samuel BRAMMAN I'm interested in is a different person.   My brother and I both have 4th - 6th cousin matches with one of his descendants in America.   If I can establish the identity of his father I hope to be a step closer to confirming that my paper trail is correct.   The father of this Samuel BRAMMAN will most likely be the brother or cousin of John BRAMMAN above.

I think the easiest thing will be to order the marriage certificate.   Thank you very much for your interest and help and have a great time in Canada.

Yes, Alice was born in Birmingham and so was her brother Richard Henry.   He died in 1867 before the family emigrated.

Mary and her son Samuel (born 1879) seem to have visited England in 1881 as I can see that they returned to the US via New York in 1881.   Mary gave birth to Charles Henry BRAMMAN in Nottingham in Q3 1885.   The 1900 US Federal Census shows him with the family in America and says he immigrated there in 1887.

I had never imagined people did that much travelling in those days.   it's ironic I can find out so much about them but can't find Samuel's baptism or birth registration.

I know I can get a marriage certificate but would prefer not to have the expense as they're not my direct line.   On the other hand, knowing the identity of Samuel's father might help break down a brick wall.

PS.   The grave is the right one.
