Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / Re: Burton family from Hanley
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 06:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
John & Hannah Burton are ancestors of mine too. Hannah's maiden name is Deakin - I have the birth certificate of daughter Hannah to prove this.
Take a look at my website to see what I've managed to find out:

Staffordshire / Re: Capewell's of Fradswell
« on: Monday 30 June 08 17:53 BST (UK)  »
It's a pleasure!
Frederick & Mary Elizabeth were the children of John & Mirose. I've found the family in 1871 in Newcastle, where Frederick's full name is given as Frederick Sparkes Greaves (born in Penkhull), his sister Elizabeth was born in Newcastle & there's another child too: John Jarvis Greaves age 6 born in Newcastle. Myra/Mirose's niece, Elizabeth Timmis age 21, was also staying with the family (she was the daughter of Mirose's sister, Elizabeth).

Of the other grave inscriptions from Fradswell churchyard that Alf has collected, Elizabeth & James (as you have deduced) were Mirose's parents, Edmund John being their youngest child. And James & Sarah Capewell were her grandparents. There were a lot of Capewells in the Fradswell/Milwich area in the 19th Century - it can all get rather confusing!

Hi teadealer,
Mirose Capewell went on to marry John Greaves in 1857. In 1861, they were resident at the Bulls Head, Newcastle, staffs, where John was the publican. As you may know already, they had 2 children, Frederick (b1860) and Mary Elizabeth (b1861). Mirose was widowed & with her 1st daughter - your ancestor - in Newcastle in 1901. She died in 1910 and was buried in Fradswell churchyard. Her grave inscription reads:
In loving memory of MIROSE widow of late John Greaves of Newcastle-under-Lyme and youngest daughter of James and Elizabeth Capewell of Doglands Farm who died April 11th 1910 age 86 years.
Rest in Peace
Mirose/Mira/Myra became a popular name amongst the Capewells, though I think your great-grandmother was the first. To save you the trip, I've seen the parish record - and, yes, Elizabeth Clementina was illegitimate.
Hope this helps!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1841 Bebbington st, Chorlton: SHONE
« on: Tuesday 01 March 05 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for a Charles Shone, bricklayer, born approx 1802 (and for any other Shones living with him.) He is listed as being at Bebbington St in Chorlton upon Medlock in 1850 (thanks Manchester Rambler!), which is the furthest back I can so far trace him.
I would also be very interested to see if a Jane Bradley (his future wife) was living close by.
Thank you lots to anyone who can help,

Wiltshire / Re: Army enlistment?
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
This may not be directly relevant... but my ancestor (from Highworth, Wilts) joined the 62nd foot regiment in 1807 - and enlisted in Pendennis, Cornwall.

You can find more information on the Wiltshire regiments here on www.regiments.org

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 Name index look-up: Manchester

Thank-you, Manchester Rambler!
The 2nd Charles Shone - the bricklayer - is mine. I tried to look the street up in 1851 but most of that area's census returns are badly damaged & illegible. Which makes your information even more helpful.
Thanks again,
cicely

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1851 Name index look-up: Manchester
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
If there's a surname index for Manchester 1851, could some kind soul in possession of one please look up the name SHONE. I know the family I am searching for was in Manchester at the time but I've no idea in which area. I have the census on CDs & have had a good trawl through but haven't come across the right people yet (Charles & Jane Shone, born in Malpas & Penkhull, Staffs respectively.) I'd just like a little help with where to direct my search more specifically.
Thanks,

Staffordshire / Re: Chesterton
« on: Tuesday 25 January 05 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Cardiff,
The Chesterton I know is a district north of Newcastle under Lyme in North Staffs. It's very much "still there" - quite industrial in parts though you can see it was probably rural at one time (it's on the edge of the Stoke/Newcastle conurbation, going towards Audley - hence the name of the road).
There is still an Audley Road - it's also the B5500. Multimap.com should be able to help you "place" it.
Was your great grandfather a miner? There were some large pits in the area until recently. One of them (Apedale) has been reclaimed to make a lovely wild area/parkland with a small mining museum attached.
You can search this site to see some old photos of the area: www.search.staffspasttrack.org.uk
Hope this helps,
cicely
