Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: Catherine Johnson 1881 Census
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
Possible BMD info. (I searched for Catherine Johnson b. 1807–1817, death in Yorkshire. This was the only death in 1889 and the only one in Hull district.)
Information removed due to copyright violation. See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/copyright.php for more details

Searching on Cath* Johnson b. 1807–1817, living in Yorkshire, gives four results on Ancestry. None are living in Hull.

  • One is a patient in Leeds, born Hull c. 1808, unmarried.
  • One is living in Beverley St. Mary, which is about 9 mi inland from Hull., born Cranswick c. 1813. Described as a farmer's widow.
  • One is living in Withernwick, also about 9 mi from Hull, born Arnoll c. 1811. Married to Robert. Her name on the census form is Cathernia.
  • The fourth is living in Wintersett, about an hour from Hull.

Let me know if you'd like more details on any of these.

A search for Cath* Johnson b. 1807–1817 in Scar* returned no results.

Aberdeenshire / Re: monquitter
« on: Saturday 13 December 08 16:10 GMT (UK)  »
According to this website—http://www.larfhc.org/scottishadm1855.htm—Monquitter is its own parish, or at least it was c. 1855.

Genuki confirms this: see the parish page for Monquhitter [note spelling], http://www.urie.demon.co.uk/genuki/ABD/Monquhitter/index.html

Cheshire / Re: James Gaskill Cheetham. Stockport
« on: Tuesday 09 December 08 06:23 GMT (UK)  »
does anyone know the reason why so many male generations had 'Gaskill' as their second name?

Sorry, can't help with the rest of your query, but my guess is that Gaskill was the maiden name of James's mother or grandmother. I've seen many ancestors in my tree who were given their mother's, grandmother's, even great-grandmother's maiden name as a middle name.

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / Re: EXE ISLAND, EXETER - Samuel POOLE, dyer
« on: Tuesday 09 December 08 06:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Jill, Not sure this will be too helpful, but it might be a start!

1) Genuki lists several parishes that covered Exe Island: Exeter Saint Edmund, Exeter Saint Leonard, Exeter Saint Thomas. See http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/DevonManors/parishes.html.

2) Cemeteries might be attached to the parish churches (possibly excepting St. Edmund's Church, which is on a bridge). However, I'm not sure that any of the parish churches actually stand on Exe Island. Someone with more knowledge of Exeter geography can perhaps answer that.

3) According to this site (http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/EM/exeisland.html), the gas works on Exe Island closed in 1878, and other industry closed in the "20th Century."

4) Can't help with access, but this bibliography (http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Exeter/ExeterGen.html) seems to suggest that the SP in the book lived 1754–1809, making it unlikely that he and John Poole's brother are the same person.

Cheers,

« on: Tuesday 09 December 08 05:02 GMT (UK)  »
I found a Charles Sherlock and daughter Annie in the 1861 census. Annie born Harrow c. 1854. Charles born Capel, Surrey, c. 1828. Occupation: police constable.

Wife named Sarah. Other children: George, Charlotte, Emma. The source citation for this record is Class: RG9; Piece: 782; Folio: 92; Page: 15; GSU roll: 542700.

In the 1881 census, Annie is an attendant at the Essex County Lunatic Asylum. Source citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 1757; Folio: 122; Page: 4; Line:  ; GSU roll: 1341423.

I couldn't find a marriage registration for Annie and Edward.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the quick reply!

If it's not too much trouble, could you let me know the full citation (Piece/book/folio/page #, etc.)?

Rutland Lookup Requests / Birth lookup, Tixover
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 15:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to find birth info for Godfrey Jelley, born c. 1791 in Tixover. I have no information on parents or siblings.

Godfrey married Eliza Cross in Gringley, Notts., in 1819. The family set up home in South Luffenham, where their first three children (that I know of) were born. Sometime between Oct 1826 and Sep 1838, they moved to Elton, Hunts. Godfrey was a farmer and miller. He died Dec 1864, presumably in Elton (death registered in Oundle).

One other thing: Godfrey and Eliza's first five children were all baptised at the Congregational church in Uppingham, so apparently as an adult he was not CoE. Whether his parents were independents also, I don't know.

Thank you for any help!

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census lookup: Elton, Hunts
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to locate Godfrey Jelley and family in the 1841 census. I have strong reason to believe they were living in Elton at the time (they're in Elton in 1851 and had children born there in 1838 and 1842).

Likely to be present with Godfrey are his wife, Eliza, and one or more of the following children: Harriet, Caroline, Jane, James, and Philip. I'm particularly interested to know if any children were born between James (1831) and Philip (1838).

I have an Ancestry.com subscription, but I can't seem to pull up any 1841 census returns for Elton on Ancestry.

Thank you for any help!
