The Lighter Side / Help with this old Bible, and was he famous

Evening all,

Whilst clearing out my grandmothers loft we came across this bible from 1885.

Apart from struggling to see the chaps name, we believe Harry Torry?

I did a quick search of John Mitchell's in Doncaster at the time and there seems to be a quite prominent footballer who played for Doncaster Rovers and Newton Heath.

Is there any way of discovering if this John Mitchell was the same guy who went on to play professional football?

Recently my 92 year old grandmother passed away, we've cleared her loft out and found...

A Bible given to my great, great, great grandfather dated 25th March 1877

But the most amazing one is a Bible given to my great, great, great grandparents on the day of their wedding by the vicar on the 6th November 1862!!!

I used to ask grandma if she knew anything about these people and she played dumb 😂

I've not seen the information on the second marriage to Thomas, was it common to blatantly lie if Joseph wasn't deceased?

The fact she kept having children after 1861 and naming them Mennel indicates she was certainly acting still married. Joseph's disappearance in the 1861 census is intriguing, to say the least. Obviously, she wouldn't be allowed to marry if Joseph was still alive. And Divorces weren't common at all then were they.

Perfect, thank you. This gives us Joseph's birth date, and father. Very helpful! it's just a case of finding where he was hiding in 1861 and had he passed before 1868? I couldn't see any death records between 1861 and 1868 that would suggest she was widdowed.

Hi all, after a little help here

So, I have Maria Barker born in 1838 in Faniby?
She seems to marry a man by the name Joseph Mennel in 1854, however on the 1861 census she has 2 children with Joseph, they are William and Jane Mennel, Maria is head of the house, a charwoman and married. In the household is 3 lodgers, one of whom Thomas Gibbon she marries in 1868.

Maria has several other children from 1861 to 1868 all with the surname Mennel, and on the 1871 census, her children have the surname Mennel and are lister as Step Son or Stepdaughter when Thomas Gibbon is head of the house.

My question is, I assume Joseph isn't deceased in 1861 as Maria is married and not widower, so where was Joseph, who was Joseph, and also, what happened to Joseph to enable Maria to re-marry in 1868?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

I agree, that's the next port of call, I just thought I'd live in hope and check here first before doing that.
