Thanks Pheno - yes have checked unlinked trees etc and have followed up a few other DNA links but its just odd I thought for people to take the test and then have no tree there for you to compare.  With so many links showing up but no way of knowing which ones are connected where its often like a needle in a haystack - whereas if they have trees at least you can dig around to find out possible local links.
With all my matches I have almost 33k and its so annoying to have people showing but no trees to find out where.  If you know which line it might be then its much easier to pick which oens to pursue.
Do people just take the test and then do nothing with it I wonder?

Not read all the replies here but I do agree with the original poster.  Took my test in Jan and have had no amazing revelations - as said most people I link with have no tree or its private - so how can we ever find a link?  I've not pursued many of the 'tips' with DNA - think I did contact one or two with no responses - have connected vaguely with one person but think we'd have done that anyway.
Some people have had such a good response with their DNA I was wondering if I was going about it all the wrong way - I have an open tree with 12k people in so plenty there for connections to show.
I've got 250 4th cousins or closer apparently.

Thanks Richard - nice to hear the patients were treated with respect like that.

The St Lawrence hospital was from 1942.

Thanks - I have a large tree which is public so my results will be too.

Have set up tiny tree for sister now - public at present - she is interested in the ethnicity part - just not in the technical stuff of setting it up - I'm not sure yet if she wants to have matches yet - not really sure how it will work - I'm happy for mine to match up with people though - I was just wondering how easy it is to have it private for now but then maybe change it to see matches later on.

If I put her tree private does that mean the DNA is as well - or is that a separate entity - I'm aware I am sounding like I don't know anything!

Hi again - just registering the DNA kit for sister - have come to the question:
'Would you like to see your DNA matches and be listed as a match?'

I said 'yes' for my own - but not sure what to put for her - if I put 'no' can I change it later - or if I put 'yes' can I also change that back - sorry maybe I should have waited till I got my own first to know what I was doing! There seems to be no explanation on the form as I go through it.

Thanks very much Margaret - thought I'd better get it all clear in my head before I send stuff off etc - that sounds very workable.  Thanks for explaining it so clearly!

I'm sure I  have read this discussed before but cannot find it now.

I have recently takent the DNA tes and its being processed - I have a large tree on Ancestry so will be happy to share my results when they come.

I'm also testing my half sister - she is happy for this to happen but I think would prefer to keep results hidden for now - not even sure how it all works yet.

BUT she's not interested in doing any of the registering stuff at all so I'll be handling that.  I have set up an email for her so that hopefully I can then take over her account without involving her at all - she doesn't do much with computers. Apparently using her email for her to nominate me to take it over or run it I think.

Any advice or tips on the best way to proceed.  She hasn't done the test yet and I've not registered hers as we've only just received it.
