Westmorland Lookup Requests / Re: KENDAL R O? - House search-DUFTON
« on: Sunday 01 March 15 07:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again

If all else fails, it would be worth sending a letter to the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald, King Street, Penrith and asking about the property.

Quite a few researchers have their letters printed in the weekly newspaper which has good distribution throughout the old Cumberland and Westmorland and especially around the Dufton area and I believe the response is usually good.

Hi Willgen

It would be worth getting in touch with the following website:

http://www.duftonvillage.info/page7.html

There is bound to be a local historian who has carried out research of the village, and would possibly be able to name the property you mention. I would have thought there will be some old photographs of the village somewhere also.

I have searched various Directories online (Kelly’s etc) but they are not giving the information you want.

You possibly have this already:

Dalton (E). In memory of James Dalton of Dufton who died December 30th 1883 aged 42 years. Also Elizabeth Ann his daughter who died December 2nd 1884 aged 21 years. Amy his daughter who died in infancy.

Another update - I will send you details, but thought I should post on here in case anyone else is researching this family.

Burial of Ann Green 12 June 1808 Ann wife of John Green, Middlegate aged 35 years.

It seems they lost a son -  Burials 13 June 1807 John son of John Green an infant.

Hello Jacqui

I had a little time today whilst in Penrith, so called in at the Library Local Studies section and printed off the marriage cert of Joseph and Catharine for you.

Marriage solumnized at the Parish Church, in the parish of Penrith in the county of Cumberland 4th February 1841, Joseph Green of full age, bachelor Joiner, residence at time of marriage Penrith father’s name John Green, Gun Maker and Catharine Bell, of full age, spinster, of Maiden Hill, father Thomas Bell, Sawyer. Married in the Parish church according to the rites and ceremonies of the established church by licence by me William Jackson, Vicar. Both Joseph and Catharine signed and witnesses were Hannah Hodgson and William Hodgson.

Note – Maiden Hill is just outside Penrith on the road to Lazonby, I know at one time it was a pub, it’s a house now.

Re death I mentioned in one of my postings above.  This was the above John Green – Westmorland Gazette 23 Sep 1826, at Penrith on Wednesday last John Green Gunsmith aged 59.  (So born c1767). He was of Middlegate when he died.

Poss marriage as Sandra mentioned. PRs mention John Green, bach and Ann Thompson, widow, both of this parish by licence 12 Dec 1804.  Possibly the reason why they married by Licence:
Baptism of Joseph Green 12 June 1805 St Andrew’s Ch, Penrith father John Green and Ann Thompson.

4 x marriages of a John Green in the early 1800s at St Andrews Ch, Penrith – parish registers as follows (from book and not microfilm):

1792
John Green married 12 Nov 1792, bachelor and Minor and Rebecca Powley, spinster, aged 22, both of this parish. (I think this rules out your John Green as he would be 25 years of age if his death is recorded rightly so not a Minor.)

1804
As above John Green 12 Dec 1804 by licence to Ann Thompson, she being a widow he a bachelor
Only one child I think to this marriage the above Joseph.

1808
20 Jun 1808 John Green, batch and Sarah Benthem, widow, both of this parish. (Note on the IGI it has HANNAH Bentham). (So not your John if he is the one who married Ann Thompson).

1812
1 Jun 1812 John Green, widower of this parish and Sarah Todd, widow of Barton parish by licence. Could this be your John who married again in 1812.  Had Ann Thompson died?

Hope this helps – I have emailed marriage cert to you.

I'm assuming that the below christening was their first son:

Name:   John Green
Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   08 May 1842
Christening Place:   SAINT ANDREW,PENRITH,CUMBERLAND,ENGLAND
Father's Name:   Joseph Green
Mother's Name:   Catharine
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C00302-2 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 90653, 90654

There is a death of a John Green, Middlegate, Penrith 58 years on 23 Sep 1826 - as this is the address that Joseph was living at and the usual naming pattern of 1st son named after father's father. I wonder if it is worth looking at some of the trade directories for Penrith earlier to see if John Green was a cabinet maker also.

Have you got the marriage cert of Joseph and Catherine?

Update: 1811 Jollies Directory for Penrith - Green J. Grocer, Middlegate.

Hi Jacqui

I'm dashing this morning, but will take another look later. The Carlisle Journal of 21 Jun 1850 has Joseph Green, Cabinet Maker, selling houses in Penrith.

CASCAT quick search - it seems Joseph was working for himself, in 1842 under DLONS/L/18/5/53 (Lowther family, Earls of Lonsdale of Lowther Hall, Lowther Castle and Askham Hall). He was sold timber at Melkinthorpe - Account of beech sold to Joseph Green of Penrith.

There is also a probate document PROB/1858/W1(a) of a Joseph Green, gentleman of Penrith the will is held at Carlisle Archives. Whether this is your Joseph I'm not sure. I think for a small fee they will run off a copy and post.

The local newspaper for Penrith is the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald, and there will probably be mention of him - including the marriage and I would have thought his death.
Jean

Quick update:
He is in Penrith Slaters Directory as Joseph Green of Middlegate, cabinet maker in 1848.

The above Will I quoted is the correct one as his probate was 25 Jan 1858, he died 18 Dec 1857 and probate granted to widow Catherine Green = effects £4,000. His business would have been thriving in 1850s due to a huge amount of properties being built in Penrith and the coming of the railway.

Hi Fellsman

As I posted in a message above:

If you do a google maps search and put in the postcode CA17 4HZ, this brings up the property of Wrenside, which was and still is at Wrenside, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen

The Manorial Court Records that Clearly mentions are held at Kendal Records Office - they did not come up in the Manorial Court Records search that I carried out - and these records  also cover the following document which should be of interest to you Jules:

Kaber Birkey, Kirkby Stephen
This record is held by Cumbria Archive Centre, Kendal
Title:    Kaber Birkey, Kirkby Stephen
Reference:    WD HH/23
Date:    1815
Held by:    Cumbria Archive Centre, Kendal, not available at The National Archives
Language:    English
Context of this record
•   24 - Cumbria Archive Centre, Kendal
•   WD HH - HEELIS AND HEELIS, SOLICITORS, APPLEBY
•   HOTHFIELD MANUSCRIPTS
•   Inclosure awards and related papers
•   WD HH/23 - Kaber Birkey, Kirkby Stephen

This document refers to land including the land at Kaber when it was enclosed in 1815, and there should be documents mentioning the land awarded (in acres, roods and perches) to your ancestors and also a map with all the landowner's names of that area.

However Manorial Court Records come from various sources - some from Solicitors, most from Landowners (Lords of the Manor) of that time, and the link above that I posted does refer to Kirkby Stephen Manorial Court Records held at Carlisle, and these documents have not been moved, and are still held at Carlisle. Most of the records refer to the Lowther Family of Lowther, Earls of Lonsdale under ref:  D/Lons, who were the landowners of a large part of Cumberland and Westmorland. I have found that it is often the way that Manorial Court Records are held in different Record Offices - some early Cumberland ones that I have viewed are held at Kew for example.

It would make sense to view the Manorial Court Records at both Kendal and Carlisle Record Offices.  The majority of these documents cannot be photocopied because of age, I have always obtained a camera licence (not sure if it has gone up in price) which was £8/day. I seem to think that Lowther family documents cannot be copied in any way.
