Lancashire / Re: Charles Thomas Donbavand, born 1853, Manchester, Lancashire

I am more confused than “confused.com” over this family and have been for years.

In 1871 both Alice and Annie are with their mother’s sister Jane Davies and her husband Richard Dawson at 53, Stott Street, Hulme.

This is the Annie who went to America and married George Slatford. The marriage details state that her parents are George Donbavand and Elizabeth Davis (without the “e”).
This was confirmed on the post re Annie.

Alice married Robert Crabtree after her sister Mary Jane died. Robert Crabtree was married to Mary Jane Donbavand.

Sarah Elizabeth Donbavand married Mark Ryder.

The census for 1861 gives Ann E as 4 years of age.  I am now wondering if this is Annie and she is actually 4 months old.

However there is a baptism for Hannah, born 4th August 1857 and baptised 2nd May 1858 in St George’s Hulme.

I have just found this entry for the baptism of Maria : https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch.org%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F3%3A1%3AS3HY-6P1P-ZS%3Fcc%3D1788853&parentid=R_102734857996

She was baptised on 11th February 1849 in All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock

Thanks Heywood

I did have the birth certificate but goodness only knows where it is. I’ve been researching this family for over 20 years (went to Manchester and Ruabon archives in those days)

I’ve just come back to it because I am trying to find a link to a DNA match and it has to be among this lot somewhere.

Thanks to the researchers on this site, Annie went to America and married George Slatford there.

I don’t think Annie and Hannah are the same people because Hannah was born in 1857 and Annie in 1860.
(Alice Donbavand named her youngest daughter Annie and Alice’s son - my maternal grandfather named his youngest daughter Annie so it was obviously a name that was significant to them.)

I did find a death for a Maria Donbavand in Chorlton in 1872 but the prison record of Charles citing Maria’s name indicated that she was still alive in 1874 or did Charles tell a “porkie”?

I can’t read the name of the road on the prison entry. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDG8-1MD
To check if Charles or Maria or Hannah were living there in 1871.

Elizabeth died on the 12th January 1860 in Chorlton.
George remarried in 1864 and died in 1868.

Thanks Heywood and CarolW.

Yes Charles was born in November 1852. I just used the BMD index when writing my post, sorry.

Just after Annie was born, her mother died.  In 1871 Alice and Annie were with their mother’s sister - Jane Davies who married Richard Dawson.
Alice went on to marry her sister’s husband after her sister Mary Jane died. Consequently Robert Crabtree married Mary Jane Donbavand and then Alive Donbavand.

Annie married George Slatford in New York and died in 1912 in America, having emigrated there.

Hannah was born 4th August 1857 and baptised 2nd May 1858 in Hulme. I’m now wondering if the Ann E on the 1861 census is Hannah. A case of dropping the “h” when there is an “h” and adding it when there isn’t one.

Thanks

Interesting that George’s cause of death was “paralysis” Ashtone.
We recently had a death certificate for my husband’s great great grandfather from 1906. He too was given the cause of death as “paralysis”.
Looking into it further he had suffered for about ten months and had been placed in an asylum because they didn’t know how to treat this at the time.
Modern day diagnosis is “syphilis”. Part of the streptococcus virus and treated today with penicillin.

Thanks for that extra information.

Lancashire / Charles Thomas Donbavand, born 1853, Manchester, Lancashire
« on: Monday 18 March 24 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to the excellent researchers looking for my last request, I am now hoping that Charles Thomas Donbavand, born 1853 in Manchester can be found.

There are many ways the enumerators have spelled the name over the years but I still cannot locate him.

Charles was born to George Donbavand and Elizabeth Davies (some records show this as Davis) in 1853 and was baptised in Manchester Cathedral on the 24th April 1853.

He is on the 1861 census living with his father George, siblings and lodgers. His mother had died after her youngest child Annie had been born.

In 1871, Charles is living in Wilfred Street, Salford with his sister Mary Jane and her husband Robert Bingley Crabtree.

In 1874 he is admitted into Manchester Prison for being Drunk and Riotess. His surname is spelled as Dunbain.
He gives his address as Lower ..aughton Road  -  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDG8-1MD
and his sister’s name Maria Donbavand.

From this I know both Charles and Maria are still alive in 1874 and neither have married.

Whilst his sisters : Mary Jane, 1844 -1887;   Sarah Elizabeth, b.1855 ; Alice, 1858 - 1905 ; Annie, 1860 - 1912 can all be accounted for, Charles, Maria, born 1848 and Hannah born 1857, cannot be found.

Any help in locating would be very much appreciated. I have tried various ways of spelling Donbavand but …….

I joked in my last posting that I hope I don’t find any more ancestors who have broken the law. Charles has had one encounter with the police, has he had more I wonder.

Thank you in anticipation of finding Thomas.
Many thanks

Hi everyone, I can’t thank you enough for all your hard work.
It’s quite sad because it appears that all the siblings died young.
It was interesting reading that the area Annie was living in at one time was regarded as a “middle class” area. My great grandmother (and great grandfather) were buried in a pauper’s plot. The three youngest children were put into the children’s home when their mother died.

From all the information you have provided it doesn’t look like George had any children.
I love the story about him pleading “guilty” for the theft of the JP’s car.
(For those of you have read about Arthur Crabtree, b.1892 he allegedly stole from his uncle in NZ.)
Looks like two cousins (mothers were sisters) were from the same mold.
I hope I don’t find any more “crooked” relatives!!!

Perhaps George junior felt it would be nice to get married before his mother passed away.
My parents did exactly the same. My father’s father was dying and from what my Gran used to say, Grampa died happy knowing that his eldest son had found “a nice girl to look after him”.

Thank you all for all the links you have provided too. I have a lot of reading to do now.

Thank you everyone.

I am in the UK so have been sleeping while you have all been searching. Thanks.

Alice Donbavand is my line. She married Robert Bingley Crabtree and I have asked questions about one of their sons - Arthur, who was my Grampa’s twin brother, and “disappeared”.

Alice’s mother Elizabeth Davies (some records have her as Davis) died just after Annie was born and their father George remarried. He didn’t live that much longer.

Because of the way the enumerators have transcribed and actually written Donbavand on records, it has taken quite some time to find the correct ones. Also one would think it’s not a popular name but……!!!

From what RJ137 and oldOhiohome have written, it looks like the Annie who has married George Slatford is the right Annie.
Thank you

I shall check it out. Many thanks too for the link. I always forget Family Search. Hopefully I’ll find the names of their children obviously born in America.

The names of George and Elizabeth’s children are - Sarah Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Maria, Charles, Hannah, Alice, Annie.
I believe Maria died young.
Mary Jane married Robert Bingley Crabtree and when she died he married her sister Alice.
Sarah Elizabeth married Mark Ryder and two of their children emigrated to New Zealand.
As for Hannah and Charles - more searching is needed.

Thank you all for your help.

Hi.

My great grandmother had a sister Annie Elizabeth Donbavand who was born in 1860 in Cholton Lancashire, UK. Sadly their mother died shortly after her birth and their father not long after.

I have searched and searched for Annie and think I may have found a possible marriage for her but the record I have found is in Manhattan, New York.
I cannot find any lists for sailing with her on ancestry either.
I do not have WW subscription, only UK so wondered if someone would kindly check the records for me please.

The record I have found indicates a marriage on the 4th November 1890 in Manhattan, New York.
The groom is George Slatford.

Do records in America state who the bride’s father is?
The name Annie Donbavand is quite a common name at that time.

In 1910 there is a chance that Annie and George are living in Los Angeles and have children.

Many thanks for your help.

Thank you MarysinMyTree

No I am not familiar with the area. I am looking for a friend who was there before being adopted.

We heard today that Croydon have no records dating back to April 1948 when he was born in a mother and baby home. Probably because it was privately run and before it was the NHS came into being.

Thank you for the link. I will show it to him when I see him next. I will also check on FindMyPast.

Best wishes
