Hi Nookie, thanks for your message. I have been in touch with Anne, and was indeed, delighted to hear from her. It may well have cleared up a mystery.

Best regard

Well well well, Frances Muriel, known as Frankie,  another of my grandmother's siblings, b. 1892.  M. 1921 in England to Henry C NEWHOOK. Never knew she went to S.A. also.  Where are you searching, please.

On checking the Death in Familysearch, I noted that the person giving details was Peter James NEWHOOK, SON-in-law.  Interesting that one of Lawrence's sisters in England married a Henry NEWHOOK!

Yes we know his parents and siblings, and what happened to most of them. His parents were Charles McCafferty and Harriet Stevenson IMRIE. Lawrence is the only child, and the youngest,  of 11, who left England, and had "disappeared".  I wonder what he was doing in Zimbabwe. Both he and his father were professional soldiers, so we were surprised not to find him in records relating to Ww1.

Hi Nookie, thank you very much for the information. I'll check it out in Familysearch.org, and also pass it on to Lawrence's 92 year old nephew  who will be MOST interested.  Any children of this marriage, do you know.  I have not found South African records the easiest  to access, but this is great. Regards Alison

Help needed to find out what happened to Lawrence.  He was born in Cork, Ireland in 1899. He served with the Black Watch and Seaforth Highlanders in WW1.  He emigrated to Durban, S. A. In July 1920.  In 1932 he was Drputy Mayor of Greater Durban Town Council and was living at 50, Fleming Johnson Rd., Durban.  Last known address at the outbreak of WW2 was as Captain L. I. McCafferty with a P.O. box number in Jo'berg.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi, thanks for your replies.  Family stories passed down always said we were connected to Leslie clan and therefore allowed to wear the appropriate plaid!  When searching for the parents of Elizabeth Leslie, I came across David and Mary. There was no birth for David in the London area, but on one piece of the family's records, there was a witness originally from Arbirlot, also at the time living in London.  So on the off chance I searched for David there, and found one, son of James and Elspeth.  Just where I've put that piece of paper, at the moment, I've no idea, but will find it and attach when I can.  David and Mary's daughter Elizabeth b. 13/Dec/1788 is my 3x gr-grandmother.  Thanks again, Alison

My 4x great grandfather.  He married Mary PARKER in Southwark, Surrey in 1785 and remained in London as a baker.  I think his parents were James Leslie and Elspeth Davidson.  I would love to know more about his family in ARBIRLOT.  Regards, Alison
