Hi Kath,

Hope you and yours are OK.

It would be great to find a really definitive solution to the "Fewell debacle" but it seems elusive.

Regards.

If you can't find please ask them they are always willing to help.
If they don't have it, they will check and see who does

Had a reply from the Norfolk Records Office, "The marriage licence bonds for that period are indexed and I am afraid that I cannot find one for Michael Dalton and Mary Beales. There are also no licences of that date in the parish collection."

Well at least I know now that around the time of booking the church and the marriage day both were living in St Mary in the Marsh, Norwich.

I do know that Michael Dalton was baptised in North Walsham, Norfolk 28 Dec 1732 and was buried in Great Ellingham 23 Jun 1811, if he was a Blacksmith like his son and grandson, both named Michael, and not bound to one employer he could have lived in several parishes prior to marrying Mary Beales.
Michael's wife Mary nee Beales was buried, as far as I can make out, 16 Dec 1776 at Great Ellingham.

Currently I'm inclined to favour three Mary Beales as the wife of Michael Dalton.
Mary Beal baptised 6 Mar 1736 at Norwich, daughter of John & Helen.
Mary Bale baptised 1736 at Norwich, daughter of Robert & Susan.
Mary Beale baptised 7 Jul 1739 at Norwich, daughter of Simon & Mary (nee Drayns).
Unfortunately the only child of Michael and Mary Dalton to have a first name the same as any of the three sets of parents above is named John, not much help.  :)

I have checked the families of Michael's son and grandson but there is not a naming pattern to help identify the parents of Mary Beales, it seems my Daltons didn't bother following naming patterns.

I think I've advanced a tad, Free Reg now have the marriage of Michael Dalton and Mary Beales, a note attached to both Bride and Groom states that their parish is "The precinct of the Cathedral Church of Norwich."

I found information which states that Norwich Cathedral was part of the parish of St Mary in the Marsh, so at least they were living in St Mary in the Marsh where they married at that time.  It also states that the church was pulled down in the 1500s!

Be interesting to see what the marriage licence gives as their parishes, if there is a marriage licence still existing.

The transcription NFHS states the marriage was by license.

Does the Norfolk Record Office still have a copy of the license?

Thanks for that amondg, somehow I missed that the marriage was by Licence, I'm not familiar with the Norfolk Records Office services but I'll look it up and see if I can find out what's available.

Mary Beale married my ancestor Michael Dalton 28 Jun 1762 at St Mary in the Marsh, Norwich, Norfolk.

I'm wondering if someone has been able to define which Mary Beale/Bale married Michael Dalton, I've failed to do so. I have the following Mary's to choose from.
1) Mary Beale baptised 7 Jul 1739 at Norwich, daug of Simon & Mary (nee Drayns).
2) Mary Bale baptised 7 May 1738 at Wreningham, daug of Simon & Elizabeth (nee Pool).
3) Mary Bale baptised 20 Oct 1738 at Wicklewood, daug of Simon.
4) Mary Beal baptised 6 Mar 1736 at Norwich, daug of John & Helen.
5) Mary Bale baptised 1736 at Norwich, daug of Robert & Susan.

Michael & Mary Dalton's children all baptised at Great Ellingham.
Anne 1763.
Jane 1764, buried as Jenny in 1765.
Michael 1765, my ancestor.
Jane 1767.
John 1769.
Thomas 1773.
Michael Dalton, senior was the son of Benjamin Dalton & Anne Cork.

One Ancestry Public Tree has Mary #1 as Michael's wife and another tree has Mary #2 as his wife, prior to discovering other Marys I had Mary # 1 as Michael's wife.

I would be grateful for any comments, ideas, I am anxious to wrap this family up.

Regards

Hi there, my ancestor is Simon Beales, twin brother to your Mary Beales who married Michael Dalton. I think you mentioned in your original post that their parents were Simon and Mary. Their mother was actually Elizabeth Poole, I believe; Simon and Mary's baptism record was incorrectly transcribed. Simon and his father Simon were weavers. Do you have a tree on Ancestry? I'd love to compare. Here's the link to mine: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/6176998/person/242336902958/facts.

Beale

Having had a good look at your tree and carried out a few checks I have to say your findings are very feasible.

I am a tad concerned regarding the Mary Beal daughter of Simon and Mary, baptised 7 May 1739 per Ancestry or 7 Jul 1738 per Family Search at St Stephen Norwich, I haven’t been able to prove she didn’t marry Michael Dalton, were you able to rule her out?

Unfortunately, Michael and Mary Dalton failed to name any of their children with Mary’s parent names or Mary’s sibling names not that proves or disproves anything because the couple don’t appear to have named a son after Michael’s father.

Just for interest and the robots.
Simon Beal marriages I found: -
Simon Beal married Mary Tillot 6 Oct 1685 at St Mary in the Marsh Norwich
Simon Bale, bachelor, married Mary Drayns, widow, 1 Jan 1733 at Wymondham.
*Simon Beal, single man, married Francis Wheeler, single woman, 29 Mar 1736 by licence at Drayton, both were stated to be of Wicklewood.

* John son of Simon and Francis Bale was baptised 29 May 1737 at Wicklewood.

Other Mary Beal/Bale Baptisms, searching 1733 to 1743 Norfolk,
Mary Beal daughter of John and Helen baptised 6 Mar 1736 at Norwich.
*Mary Bale daughter of Simon baptised 20 Oct 1738 at Wicklewood Norfolk.

And from Essex although irrelevant: -
Mary Beal daughter of Johannis baptised 5 Jan 1739 at Wethersfield, Essex.

I found what could be the burial of Elizabeth Bale (nee Pool) wife of Simon, Elizabeth was buried 25 Feb 1741 at Wreningham the same day as Simon & Elizabeth's daughter Rebecca was baptised at Wreningham, unfortunately the entry did not provide any identifying details such as Elizabeth being someone's wife or daughter.
