Technical Help / Re: Ancestry Messages
« on: Saturday 24 February 24 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
The messaging system hangs from time to time.

One message we sent took 8 years before the response came back.

Likewise, Ancestry has emailed us to advise that we have had two new messages received - They still have not appeared in the inbox!

Technical Help / Re: Cookies on RootsChat - can 'Reject All' be added please
« on: Wednesday 29 March 23 13:35 BST (UK)  »
I agree, it does take too long to tick all of the boxes and a “reject all” box would be of great help as this is reappearing on a regular basis.

Thanks,

The Common Room / Re: George James Stevens (1832-1907)

Hi All,

Many thanks for all of your searches undertaken.

Christine53 an interesting find as they were both 'bakers', my only concern would be - was it be acceptable for a 30 year old man marrying an 57 year old woman back in 1862 ?  I think I will keep this as a strong possibility, if no alternative matches are found.

Emeltom & Maddy52 her room was quickly put to Rent within a week of her getting married and you are right concerning the possible death records.

Thank you, the search continues,

The Common Room / George James Stevens (1832-1907)
« on: Thursday 23 March 23 10:31 GMT (UK)  »
We have the above gentleman born about 1832 in Harrow, Middlesex, son of Zachariah (a tailor) and Charlotte Brown. We have him in all census from 1841 to 1901 before he dies in 1907 in Yorkshire (we even have his parents and older children in the 1831 Census !).

He marries a Sophia Harbrow (a widow of ‘Full Age’) on 19/10/1862 in St Marys Church, Islington, Middlesex, with the Marriage Cert showing her father as Henry Badger, a Cooper. Her address at the time of marriage was 2 Strahan Terrace (which we could not find by searching this address in the 1861 census on FindMyPast).

In the 1871 census, George Stevens (a Baker in 1861 & on his marriage certificate) is found in Leeds, Yorkshire showing as widowed. In 1881 he is shown as single, living in Clifford cum Boston, Yorkshire. He subsequently remarries in 1887 to Ann Wilson in Bradford.

The question is, who was Sophia Badger/Harbrow as having looked for birth/marriage/death/census we have failed to find any trace of her.

Thank you,

The Common Room / Re: ?Questionable email from MacKiev
« on: Friday 12 August 22 07:59 BST (UK)  »
Is it a scam ?  The email address is clearly from MacKiev, with the email very well laid out (unlike other spam emails received with spelling errors etc) and we know that their “company is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, and its main workshop is in Kiev, Ukraine”.  I think we will wait to see what other Users decide to do ……..

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA hits through Thrulines vs paper trail
« on: Wednesday 28 July 21 06:31 BST (UK)  »
My one complaint with Thrulines is that Ancestry does not give you the option to reject any proposed matches.  I have seen a number of matches for alleged half- brothers, where no proof of these additional lines/relationships exist.
