Hi Jack. No, I haven’t been able to get any further back with Jane McClure, so no idea of where she was born, who her siblings or parents were.
I’ve been trying to get more info on her for the last 20 years without success.  Hopefully get a DNA match to break down that brick wall some day.

It would be customary for it to be lodged there after it had been granted confirmation in Scotland if he owned property in England and Wales.

Yes, the original will was written and dated 16th April 1787.

I have since discovered that the 1787 will was written “down south”, because his naval career was based there, and he had property there also.

The reason I asked if it was possible to view the contents of the 1787 will, was because the 1803 makes reference to people who were named in the previous will.
I was attempting to confirm more information on those people.
I know that the previous will cancels the new one,  and now know it’s not possible to view contents of previous will.

Which Laurence are you referring to?
There was Laurence Skeen Dow (1819-1880)  who was named after his maternal grandfather, Lawrence Skeen (1763-1838).  There were multiple other Lawrence’s also.

Hi Jen,

John said that John Neilson and Margaret Spence were his grandparents on his dads side, and that they lived between Paisley and Renfrew up until his grandfathers death in 1972.

That's not possible. John and Margaret lived all their married life in Port Glasgow. Margaret Spence died in 1946, and her husband, John Neilson died in 1957. They were my hubbys grandparents.
Their son John died in infancy in 1933. Their only other son, Billy, has one son himself, not called John though.

Thomas Neilson (b.1804) was married twice. First wife was  Christina McNab, second wife was Mary Stewart

Unfortunately there isn’t a connection.

John Neilson didn’t have a middle name. I've got his original birth/marriage/death certs, as well as  all the original insurance policy documents he had over the years, and none give a middle name.

They lived all their married life in Port Glasgow. Margaret Spence died in 1946, and her husband, John Neilson died in 1957, so its not possible that this couple would have been your grandparents, as you mention your grandfather died in 1972.

Looking to find the death date for David Thomson.

This is what I know about him.
David was born 1790 in Edinburgh. He married Mary Ann, surname, date and place unknown. Mary Ann was born in England.
They had two known children, Mary Cecelia Thomson born 3 March 1939, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia; and Georgiana Hawkes Thomson born 25 Apr 1842, Eldon, Clarence Town and Dungog, New South Wales, Australia.

On the 1861 census, the family are living in St Sampson, Guernsey, Channel Islands.
David is 71 yr old, his wife Mary is aged 55 (born in England). Their 2 daughters are with them on the census.
I haven't been able to view the image on Ancestry as it doesn't appear to show, so unsure what Davids occupation would show as.

On the 1871 census, they are living at 3 Cameron Place, Rouquettes, St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands.
On this census, David is listed as an 81 yr old Surgeon RN (presumably retired from Royal Navy), his wife Mary Ann is 65. Both daughters are with them, and unmarried.

Mary Ann died on 1 October 1877 at 3 Cameron Place, Rouquettes, and was a widow when she died.

So that helps to narrow down Davids death to between 1871 - 1877.

Is there anyone who could help me find out when he died, presumably in Guernsey, and where he may be buried.
