He was married to Elizabeth but I don't know if he was a coalman. He was a linen weaver in 1841 and 1851, agricultural worker in 1861 and a road labourer in 1871. A man of many talents!!

I am unravelling the whereabouts of my gr gr gr grandfather. Born in Osmotherley in 1811 and died in May 1884. Found his grave in Osmotherley but he is not anywhere on the 1881 census.....
Any suggestions?   ???

Thank you Jill. I have had quite a break from research and hadn't come across the non conformist site...it may solve a lot more problems for me too! I'm still not sure if this is the same Anthony Horace, although the date seems right. What on earth was he doing in Paris in 1833?? Apart from fathering a child with a domestic....

Can anyone help me find information about the parents of Anthony (Antoine on one census) Horace Knowles and Ann Shaw who married in Rotherham on 16th March 1835??
He seems to be a bit of a mystery man since I can't find his birth anywhere either..apparently listed as coming from 'foreign parts' in 1811 and eventually as Colnbrook, Bucks..but no luck there either!!    ???

Thanks for checking that, Steve.  It seems that most of that part of the family were non-conformists so I'm not sure if they will figure in PRs.......

He was at 2 Ashforth Street in 1885 and in the 1881 census he was with his parents in Green Hill Lane, Alfreton, Derbs.
The Clifton Colliery is an interesting suggestion - I shall google them tomorrow. Many thanks

Through various means I have traced AHK as having been born in Colnbrook in 1793 or thereabouts. He married Ann Shaw in Rotherham in 1835 and died in Chesterfield in 1865. Any ideas about tracing his family/background in Colnbrook? I have had no luck in finding the name on lists , censuses or poll registers except for Elizabeth Knowles in Chesham in the 1841 census.

Hi Ruskie and copperbeech5!

I have followed George through censuses...he missed the 1891 one by a month or so and was  listed as a colliery engine worker  in the 1881 census.....that is probably where the 'engineer' bit came from on his death cert and marriage cert (not in that order!) Back to my original query - can I find out which colliery he worked at?

Copperbeech...what is PM'd???

Nottinghamshire / mining registers?

My gg grandfather died of phthisis (TB or similar) in 1891 but I believe that he had been a mining engineer in Nottingham and had (so family legend has it!) written a book on mining.  George Stevens, born 1856 and married Martha Ann Knowles in 1885.  Any suggestions about how I can find out where he worked or what he might have done?
