Hi Jon,
There is a Lepine in my husband's family. His great-grandfather was Frank Courtenay Lepine bapt 28 Sept 1890, St Peter's Maidstone Kent (LDS). He had a brother Robert Dawson Lepine who died in the Great War. Frank came to South Africa  about 1916 to experiment with explosives in the African Explosives factory (also known as Kynochs) in Umbogintwini as he was an analytical chemist. On 6th June 1917 he married Amy Beatrice Rankin in the Isipingo Anglican Church. They had three daughters : Mary Elizabeth, Pauline Margaret and Antoinette. The marriage broke up in the early 1920's. Frank moved to the Cape where he worked as a laboratory chemist at KWV (Ko-operatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika Beperkt.) at Paarl. He died on 16th February 1933 of a heart condition. He is buried at the Woltemade Cemetery in Maitland.

That's about all the information we have as his daughters had no contact with him as he was an alcoholic and left his family in a dire financial position.

As I am in South Africa I have to do most of my research online. From the 1891 census, I believe his father was John Dawson Lepine and his mother Fannie.

Any further information about this family would be most appreciated.

Lancashire / Robert James Bamber born 1877 Preston, Lancs
« on: Friday 04 June 10 14:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I have just received a copy of the birth cerificate of Robert James Bamber born 10 July 1877 in Preston, Lancs.
I presume this is my great grandfather as he is the only one I could find on Lanc BMD that matched an extrapolated birth date. I have RJ's death notice (died in 1951 in Pretoria, South Africa) and it gave Preston as the place of birth and his age at death.

On the BC it gives father as Thomas Bamber ( Iron moulder) and mother as Mary formerly Hart, POB 28 Villiers Str.

From Lanc OPC I found a marriage for Thomas Bamber age 23 Moulder of 28 Villiers Str and Mary Hart age 23 Weaver of 13 St Walburg Str.
Grooms father is James Bamber (dec), Dresser and bride's father is Robert Hart, labourer.
Witnesses: Joseph Moss, Jane Bamber
Date of marriage: 24 June 1877, Emmanuel, Preston.
The marriage date seems awfully close to Robert James' birth!

1881 Census:
17 Peel Str West, Preston
Thos. Bamber Head M  M  27 Preston  Iron Moulder
Mary Bamber  Wife  M  F   28 Bretherton  Cot weaver
Robt. Bamber  Son       M   3  Preston
Mgt.E. Bamber Dau      F    2  Preston
Wm. Bamber    Son      M   3m  Preston

This seems to be the correct family as my GG named his sons Thomas Robert James Bamber, William Henry Bamber and Albert Victor Bamber.

Is anyone doing any research on this Bamber or Hart family? Any help would be appreciated. :)
Thank you
Carrie

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Roderick ROSS born abt 1877, Stornoway
« on: Friday 04 June 10 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Thanks so much for the prompt reply, Gadget. ;)

Unfortunately in South Africa, the death notice is often completed by surviving relatives so the information is often incorrect or omitted if they don't know.
Nothing was filled in for him under parents and a date of birth wasn't given.
His marriage certificate is just as unhelpful, as there is no DOB or place of birth column. He got married on the 10th of July 1907 at the Greyville Presbyterian Church to Maria Gracie Wilson of Durban. His residence was given as Utrecht, Natal where he apparently owned the local pharmacy.

It also seems quite a step up that he became a chemist as his grandfather, Allan McLeod, on the 1851 census is listed as a shoemaker and his great grandmother Henrietta McLennan (McLean depending on where you look) was a pauper whilst living at Inaclete.

How and why he decided to leave Stornoway and travel so far will probably remain a mystery.
Thanks for your help and I will keep you posted once I have bought some more credits on SP.
Regards,
Carrie

Ross & Cromarty / Roderick ROSS born abt 1877, Stornoway
« on: Friday 04 June 10 13:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
This is my first post so I hope I get things right!
I am trying to find some birth details for my great grandfather Roderick ROSS. ???
I have looked on Scotlands People but can't find anyone of the right age or place.
He registered as a chemist and druggist with the Natal Pharmacy Board in 1905, married Maria Gracie WILSON in Durban, RSA in 1907 and died in Durban in 1962.

From the census records I have the following:

1901 living in Largs, Ayrshire age 25, chemist and druggist, born Stornoway

1891 living in Newton Street, Stornoway, Roderick ROSS, grandson, age 14, chemist apprentice, born Stornoway
with him is:                                       Betsy MCLEOD, head, age 78, living by private means, born Stornoway
Christina MCKENZIE, daughter, age 47, living by private means , born Stornoway
1881 living in Inaclete, Stornoway,   Roderick ROSS, Grandson, age 4, born Stornoway
Elizabeth MCLEOD, head, widowed, age 68, housekeeper, born Stornoway
Henrietta MCLEOD, daughter, unmarried, age 25, domestic servant, born Stornoway

Who were his parents??? He named his eldest daughter Henrietta, so was she named after his mother?
I am stuck and I don't know where else to look. I can't find anything of use on IGI except for a possible birth of Christian(?) MCLEOD in 1841 to parents Allan MCLEOD and Elizabeth MCLEAN.
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Carriesa :)
