Travelling People / Burnside family
« on: Saturday 30 May 20 19:27 BST (UK)  »
10 years ago. I shared many exchanges here with very helpful people regarding the Burnside family and my interest in Mary Burnside of Guisborough born 1831 (daughter of Edward and Sarah). Just wondering if any of those people are still using this forum.

This may be ages too late for anyone to be following! We are researching the names on Rodborough's war memorial and have a particular interest in George Edward and William Leonard Allen.

We would love to identify the house where they lived in Tabernacle Walk. We have press information about the war deaths.

I made a note that one of the children of Mazilla and Henry Allen was born at Rubble Hole, but I'm not sure where this information came from. Can anyone confirm?

This is a very quick reply as I don't have time to check facts at the moment but can do later today. Edward and Annie Isabella Grout are my great grandparents. I am not aware that Alexander is their child.

I think the Annie Isabella Grout who married Bennett is their daughter. Is he really Thomas Grout Bennett? This seems odd as apart from this family it is not a local name.

I'm sure Annie Isabellan(known as Isabel) Grout Snr did not remarry. I have her death cert as Grout in 1959.

Hello to you Hary

As you will see from previous messages. I am also connected to this ( huge!) family my g grandfather was Edward Gout who was the brother of John William.

I have looked on Ancestry and I find a Carney tree that gives Bella Grout m John Gallacher 1920. But no parents details. I think this may not be yours.

I would be most interested to know if you know any more of Mary Ann Grout ( formerly Smith). I have some theories, but we have drawn a blank on any concrete evidence.

Ceeoh and myself have been collaborating for some years and have probably pieced together a great deal of the rest.

Best wishes

I have just come across your post while doing a Google search in connection with names on Rodborough war memorial.

There are 2 Allens whom we believe to be sons of Henry & Ella Allen of 9 Alfred St, Reading.

George Edward was killed in action in France in 1918 and WL Allen ( same parents) died in 1917 and is buried in Rodborough Churchyard with a Commonwealth War Graves headstone.

Your query is listed under travelling families. Were the Allens travellers?  Do you have a copy of the memorial card? We (local history Group) would be most interested if you have any more information.

Best wishes

I wonder if anyone has access to Evening Gazette archives.

I am seeking further information about the death of James Coates of 46 Cockburn St, Lingdale on 4th Sept 1942, as a result of an accident at North Skelton Mine. The death cert says inquest held 4th Sept and by adjournment on 16th Sept, the death cert was issued on 18th Sept.

I can find nothing online and I am too far away to use Teesside archives.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Travelling People / Re: help with romany links

I hope you don't mind me chipping in. I am descended from the same family as Ceeoh and I just wanted to ask you about marriage. When you say they were strict about marriage, do you mean a legally recognised marriage in church, or would there be Romany alternatives that were considered equally valid and might this explain why we can't find a marriage record for Mary Burnside or James Bradley?

Many thanks

Ceeoh - Yes, it defies all logic, but then it seems the way the Burnsides conduct their affairs often does! Mary Smith is not traceable with the details given, Mary Burnside disappears without any evident marriage or death, Mary Bradley with son Joseph makes a brief appearance with no collaborative marriage or registration/ baptism for Joseph. I know it's all circumstantial. Mary Smith/ Grout has some link with the Burnsides as she goes briefly to New Durham and they witness her marriage and she returns to Guisborough. There are more questions than answers! Why did she have 3 children with Charles Grout before marrying him? Why marry him anyway by that point?

Colin - Yes I did note the Mary Smith in Aycliffe in 1841. This is interesting as Mary Burnside and family are not found in 1841. This Mary would be the right age, but there is nothing to suggest her parentage. In 1851 Mary Burnside is in Guisborough with her parents Edward  b Yackley (I believe this is Aycliffe) c 1801 and Sarah b Bradford c 1804 and siblings. Edward is a licensed hawker
