Thank you for your reply. His son, William Hinton was born in Dec 1862 in Camden Town, London. His birth was registered in Pancras district. His mother was Susan Ann Morgan, and she in on the 1861 census living with her parents in Pancras/Camden Town. She is given as unmarried at that time. Between 1862 and 1868 she had 4 children - all born in or around London/Woolwich so I don't think she was ever abroad.
We can't find Daniel's death, but bearing in mind his youngest child was born 1868, he must have died between then and 1871. Possibly the Royal Marines were at Woolwich barracks?
One last thing. When his son William married in the 1890s he gave his father Daniel's occupation as 'clerk' suggesting he left the army before he died?
