Family History Beginners Board / Loyal Mcleod Fencible Regiment of Foot
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 15:12 BST (UK)  »
I have a GGG grandfather Robert Mcleod, (b. about 1776) in Sutherland, Scotland, who was in one of the Fencible units and deployed to Ireland.  While there he met and married Francess Liddle, (b. 1782 Londonderry)  and they had their first child in Londonderry, in 1800.  They returned to Robert's Scotland where he was disbanded, and they went on to have a further seven children.  I know that there is a Robert Mcleod listed in the Reay Fencibles, but am unable to find out any other details.  And so I am wondering if he may have been in the Loyal Macleod or Princess Charlotte of Wales Fencible Regiment under Col. John Macleod of Colbeck.  I have read that men in the Fencibles had to get permission to marry and their prospective wives had to be of a certain calibre.  Therefore, one could expect there to be records of such marriages.  Robert would only have been of an ordinary rank I expect.  Once back in Scotland he was a crofter in Strathy, Sutherland.  Can anyone suggest where I might be able to find records of men serving with Princess Charlotte's regiment? Thank you.

Ireland / IRELAND : SEARCHING FOR A WILLIAM LIDDLE
« on: Friday 19 January 18 15:06 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently learned that my GGGG Grandfather was a clergyman/reverend/pastor, possibly first name WILLIAM (going by naming patterns), LIDDLE, possibly in Londonderry or Dublin.  Church not known - could be Church of Ireland or Presbyterian.  His daughter (my GGG Grandmother) was Francess Liddle born about 1782 in Londonderry.  She married a Fencible, Robert Mcleod, whilst he was serving in Ireland, and they had their first child in either Londonderry or Dublin, i.e. George Mcleod b. 1800. (They thereafter went to Scotland permanently).  It's possible that William Liddle officiated at their marriage and the baptism of the baby George.   Can anyone give me some ideas as to how to locate William Liddle, his daughter Francess and the baby George?  Thank you.

Many thanks for all your information - it does seem to be a hopeless task - I have hoped that their story might have been passed down the generations, but so far I have not been able to find any living descendants who have any knowledge of Fanny and Robert, sadly.

Thank you very much Westward for your reply - I have seen the baptism of the Robert Mcleod in Lairg (father Donald), and have wondered if it applies.   Knowing now that ages were marked down in the 1841 census makes for a re-think. On that same 1841 Census (Strathy, Farr) there is a boy of "10" living (or visiting) them born "not of this Parish" - I haven't been able to locate him at all even via Robert and Fanny's grandchildren.  All the relevant Roberts are with their respective parents in the Strathy, Farr, 1841 census. I believe that Robert would have had to get permission to marry Fanny while he was in Ireland with the Fencibles - I can find no record of this on line, nor of the birth of their first child, George Mcleod born in Londonderry in 1800.  If you have any further suggestions I would be most grateful.

Derry (Londonderry) / Robert Mcleod in the Fencibles and Fanny/Francess Liddle
« on: Saturday 21 October 17 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have info on Robert Mcleod  - Crofter/Farmer; b. 1776 Sutherland and Fanny Liddle b. 1781 Londonerry. (various spellings of her name, including Francess Leighton). Robert Mcleod was in one of the Fencible units deployed to Ireland in about 1798, where he met Francess/Fanny Liddle.  They married and had their first child in Londonderry while he was still with the Fencibles, i.e. George Mcleod b. 1800 Londonderry. I cannot find any records of the marriage of the birth of baby George. I wonder who Robert and Fanny's parents were and any other information if at all possible. They returned to Robert's Scotland after the disbandment of the Fencibles in about 1803 and went on to have more children.
I have some knowledge about some of their children:   William; Donald; Jean; Robert; another William; John, and David (my GGG Grandfather). All born Reay and Farr.  But I need any information on Robert and Fanny's  parents, and siblings.  Thankyou.

I have been trying without much luck to find more information about my GGG grandparents, i.e. Fanny Little b. abt 1782 (various spellings Liddle, Liddel, and Little) born in Londonderry, N Ireland and  Robert Mcleod (b. abt 1776, Sutherland, Scotland.  It has been presumed that Robert Mcleod was in one of the Fencibles and was sent to Ireland during some troubles there, and that he then met Fanny there and they married.  Their first son, George Mcleod, was born in Londonderry in 1800, and thereafter Fanny and Robert and George went back to Robert's own country where they had a further seven children.

I have been unable to find anything more about Fanny and Robert  during their time in Ireland,  i.e. record of their marriage/ birth of George/ Fanny's parents, siblings  and so on, due, it seems, to some records having been destroyed.  I would appreciate any information at all (including any information on Robert's family/parents/siblings in Scotland). Thank you.
