Sorry I didnt acknowledge your post Suffolkmawther,

Like I said before, I don't have any local knowledge of this part of the world, so any advise or suggestions are welcome.

I looked on the 1841 census and found a William Rose aged 70 (born 1871) and wife Elizabeth 65 (1776) living in METFIELD, which as you pointed out is a bordering parish to St james. Who could be the William and Eliz (Andruss) from that record on IGI.

I'm a bit apprehensive to start adding these people to my tree, only to find out there were hundreds of Roses around at the time (I suppose the collective name for a lot of people called Rose would be a Bunch!)

I had another look on IGI for a birth/christening in Suffolk for an Elizabeth Sampson around 1800.
and I found this:
17 SEP 1799       'Mettonham' Suffolk, England.

Mettonham - Mettingham, sounds pretty good to me - anyone have an opinion?

the parents are listed as JOHN SAMPSON and HANNAH BRIGHTON

I also found a 1841 census for John sampson born 1781
and Ann born 1786 (hopefully its wrong as it makes her only 13/14 when Elizabeth is born)
in St lawrence, Ilketshall - which is pretty close by.

I have also found a baptism record for a James rose
09 DEC 1798       South Elmham-St James,
son of William and Eliz Andruss.

could anyone check these

thanks

Thanks Rick,
perhaps my best chance would be finding James Rose's birth, that would have his parents wouldn't it?
Also been looking at google maps around St James, and the 1851 census again, I think Elizabeth Sampson could be from METTINGHAM which isn't too far away.
The census looks like 'Mellinham' - if you cross the Ls to make Ts and you stick in a silent G between the N and H
it could fit.

Thanks again

I recently found out the maiden name of my ancestor Elizabeth -  who i knew was married to James Rose around the early 1820's (their kids births range from 1822 to 1842)
Her maiden name was written as SAMPSON on their youngest childs birth cert.

I looked on IGI and found

JAMES ROSE      ELIZABETH SAMPSON
     Marriage:
06 MAR 1821      South Elmham Saint James, Suffolk, England.

could someone please have a look for me so I can get the parents of these two.

Also - and I hope I am no too cheeky asking this, as this is the first time i have made a request.
could someone look for the Birth records of their children, all in the same parish

Eliza abt 1830, George abt 1828, John abt 1826, Robert abt 1825, William abt 1823, James jnr abt 1822.
(Godparents' names might help with family connections)

and finally
JAMES Rose abt 1800 - this should give me his mum's name

I dont think Elizabeth Sampson was from that Parish. I have one census return from 1851 that has been mistranscribed by Ancestry as 'Medmenham' but which looks more like 'melleacham'.
I have no local knowledge of Suffolk (the Rose family moved to Lancs/cheshire, and I live in Ireland) but I thought the best match I could find was MARTLESHAM.
If anyone can help with that I'd appreciate it

All the best
