Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Newspaper article - Ashford

Apologies for taking so long to log back on! Recently went back to the UK and thought the records office in Maidstone would keep all Kent newspapers. They didn't. So, the search goes on!

So frustrating! Went to the county archive in Maidstone for details of the inquest, but the records had not been kept!

Kent / Re: re: tonbridge workhouse records

I stumbled across this thread. I live in the US (I'm a recent emigree!) but the information kept in Maidstone is quite staggering and asked a local researcher to look there on my behalf. My grandfather was born in the workhouse, and the information I got back showed approximately when he was born (my gt grandmother came in after dinner and game birth before breakfast the next morning). It is well worth getting one records. There were other records that were uncovered too about other ancestors that were truly enlightening. I'm planning a trip back to England soon - and a visit to the archives is on the list of things to do!

Ace. Thanks!
Confirms that my Gt grandmother was living and working for him when she went to the workhouse to give birth to granddad! These little details matter..!

Hi bearkat,
Thanks so much for that...!
That's confusing, eh?!  Perhaps he was told that name and got confused about what it was. Crikey!
Was this the record for Sutton Valence or a nearby parish (like Headcorn)? I assume that as you only had mother, there was no father registered? If you COULD look in Headcorn too, that would really help. You never know.
Thanks. Now I'm even more puzzled!!!

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Sutton Valence look-up please 1824
« on: Saturday 04 February 12 17:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi helpful rootschat folk,
I wondered if anyone could look-up someone who seems to have been elusive to me. I would be so grateful.
I am trying to find someone called Thomas Tolhurst Smith, born circa 1824 in Sutton Valence, Kent. I am starting to wonder whether Thomas was a nickname. It is the name he uses on his marriage certificate (along with Tolhurst), but on a census record his entry is just Tolhurst Smith. If that is the case, then having a fairly common surname is negated by his christian name!
Anyway, my KFHS CD-Roms don't have entries for Sutton Valence going back that far and I'm kinda stumped. I think his father was Thomas, if that helps any.  In short, I can find records of his marriage, just not his birth, to progress.
Thanks in advance.

Kent / Re: Percy Gregory, vet, of Tonbridge

LOL...!
You were right the first time...! It was Percy Gregory and the entry on the index you searched had his surname first, ie Gregory, Percy. When I put my posting on, I made the mistake of putting his birth year as 1866 instead of 1856, which is right (and what you said!).
