Hi Beeny

Were you able to find out any more about your ancestor ?

My family descends from the Arlows in County Down, but with so many Samuels - its been a challenge to join them up !

Kind Regards
Stephen

Hi

I have a Jane Smith, but she was born act 1870 in Ramsey.

There appear to have been two Smith family/groups in the IOM and I've not been able to find the link between the two.

My earliest ancestor there was John Smith born about 1832 in England, who married Agnes Buchaman (spelt various ways !) born about 1834 in England. They were married 22/may/1864 in Ramsey but I've not found out why they went there ... perhaps one of them had family in the IOM ?

Regards
Stephen

Hi Ian

Thanks for your reply.

John Smith (senior) was the Fireman, and was born in 1865 in Ramsey. In the 1891 census he was married to Martha, working as a labourer and living in Bootle with his family (all his children, inc my grandfather were born in Bootle).

By 1901 he was a fireman, and by 1911 was Chief Fire Officer in Bootle until about 1927 when he returned to the IOM (possibly via Belfast).

He was Chief Fire Officer in Ramsey from 1928-1942.

Since my post, I've been able to trace more of my grandfather's siblings which has been a huge leap forward.

But I'd be interested to know more about my great grandfather, John Smith senior.

Especially his parents, siblings, and anything from his time in the Ramsey FB.

Kind Regards
Stephen

I'm trying to trace my Great Grandfather's family.

Does anyone have info on John Smith, born about 1860 (I think in Ramsey). With a name like Smith its a bit of a "challenge" but if anyone could help or point me in   the right direction it would be great !

All I know about him is that he was Chief Officer of the Ramsey Fire Brigade from 1928-1942 and, of course, his son John (born 1894) was my grandfather.

In the attached photo, he is standing in the centre of the front row.
