The Common Room / Re: Hit a brick wall finding my Gt Gt Grandfather, help!

As far as I know You can call yourself whatever name you want - providing there is no intent to use for fraudulent purpose.

Obviously, nowadays you would need to register it by deedpoll to be proof and accepted by the authorities.
(i.e passport, driving licence, inland revenue, local council etc.).

As Henry was still young he probably was led to believe Daniel was his father and assumed that he was, therefore, to look respectable he used his name on his marriage certificate.

The sons joined the military and fought in the Boer and WWI. It is believed the parents returned to Ireland at some time after. One son married in Scotland, one son in Northumberland and the rest in Ireland. Another son is thought to have absconded from the military and disappeared. One daughter married in Ireland and the other is thought maybe Ireland/Scotland and emigrated.
I am the grandson of James aged 11

Interesting birth record of a Charles Hamilton, father James Hamilton, mother Sarah Hamilton nee' SIMPSON. Wonder if James Hamilton and Charlotte were brother and sister and took in Rachel after her mothers death

added, marriage of James Hamilton and Sarah Simpson

I am not aware of a Charlotte in this family.

They never fail to throw in a wobbly one.

Rachael of many names.

1890 Beckett nee Hamilton
1891 and 1893 Beckett nee Downey
1897 and 1906 Becket nee Simpson
1919 Becket nee Simpson
1949 Beckett nee Hamilton again

Is there any other information to pointing to Stuart Beckett as the father of James. Can I find out who he was married to?
Or is he just a possibility?

Thank you again

Yes, it's certainly a conundrum. Perhaps Rachel's fathers name could be John Downey

Good luck

A gedcom file is a text file and can be opened in your favourite text editor.

Genealogy programs will open/import a gedcom file, the problem arises when the specific program
that exported it uses user defined tags; they are not recognised by all genealogy programs and will be ignored upon import into a genealogy program that does not recognise these specific tags.

User defined tags normally start with an underscore.

Hope this is understandable.

The Common Room / Re: Help determining a Birth date range
« on: Wednesday 28 February 24 12:38 GMT (UK)  »

This is a question about an Irish person, so there is no 1881 Census available (at least on the National Archives of Ireland site).

As far as I know there are no 1881 Irish census records available, there are a few earlier ones but the
areas they cover are very sporadic.

If the person is Irish have you tried to find his birth certificate?
Which should give the date of birth and names of parents

Here is Robert in the 1901 Census
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wicklow/Wicklow_Town/Ball_Alley/1817376/

In 1911 Census
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Wicklow/Wicklow_Urban/Kilmantin_Hill/898625/

After the death of Robert in 1937 it looks like Margaret and the family moved to Birmingham.
They may appear in the 1939 Register but I haven't looked.

Technical Help / Re: Keeping just Recording of sound from a video - - -
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
All you have done at the moment is extract the audio from the video in it's entirety
and it need a little tidy up.

You can use the same online converter to 'cut' a section of an MP3

  https://www.onlineconverter.com/cut-mp3

You will need to make a note of the start and end time of the 'frog' chorus.
i.e. if it starts at the beginning use "from the start" if it starts at 3sec in, use the "start second"
from the drop down menu and enter the exact time to start.

Enter the time in the second box one second before the 'cellos' start under "end second"

Voila, you should have a new edited MP3 audio file.

You might consider trying it few times to get the hang of it.

I did notice that my video is labelled MP4  rather than 3.   :-\  Don't know if that makes a difference.

As your file is an MP4 that is the container which holds a video stream and an audio stream.
An MP3 is an audio file.

Here is an online convertor you could try. It may be easier than installing an audio editing program which may need many settings changed to get a good result.

   https://www.onlineconverter.com/extract-audio-from-video

The default audio file it extracts is set to MP3. Try it and see.

Good luck
