You've probably gone past this level of information already but here is a list of the Canterbury Forrester Lodges in the 1880's, if they were Rangoons then Kaiapoi would have been their local branch, perhaps they have records at the Kaiapoi Musuem.

Court Star of Canterbury, No. 2309, Bro. W. Buckley, Secretary, Foresters' Hall, Oxford Terrace, Christchurch.

Court Queen of the Isles, No. 2703, Bro. Smith, Secretary, Foresters Hall, Lyttelton.

Court Pride of Courtenay, No. 6031, Bro. G.F. White, Secretary, Courtenay.

Court Star of Ashburton, No. ——, Bro. Barrett, Secretary, Ashburton.

Court Thistle of the Forest, No. 6494, Bro. W.D. Marks, Secretary, Sydenham.

Court Woodford, No. 6583, Bro. ———, Secretary, Kaiapoi.

Court Pride of Richmond, No. 6584, Bro. T.G. Strange, Secretary, Linwood.

Court Pride of Papanui, No. 6585, Bro. Osborne, Secretary, Papanui.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Oddfellow
« on: Monday 27 April 09 12:41 BST (UK)  »
My ur-ancestor, emigrated to NZ in 1840 and amongst other things spent his time setting up Oddfellow lodges, so I presume he was an Oddfellow before he left.  Does anyone have a clue where I could look to find out his providence?  I think he was a Worshipful Master.  He lived in Holborne.

Thanks for that tip Corkscrew. I have located the online version of that hockey photo. If nothing else comes up I will have to locate the owner of that photo or contact the hockey club to see if they have any further records of Isabella.

oh yeah KHP but then thinking about it perhaps the ships records should have stated 2 years and not 2 months.??? I think I'll stick with the 1880 estimate

I should of said the owner is the Hinemoa HC

Isabella (b. abt 1880, Scotland) was a foundation member of the Hinemoa Hockey Team.

In "Women of the Waimakariri" there is a good photo of the first HHC team before their debut match, Isabella may well be in it.  Unfortunately the picture caption doesn't have the names of the team listed.  The picture has however been overwritten with numbers on each of the ladies so the holder of the original might have a list of those pictured.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Oxford,Canterbury

Well I'll take part 3
Canterbury as a whole was a Wakefieldian planned settlement.  The original idea was that the main settlement of Christchurch would have a satellite university town.  Naturally given the amount former Oxford students in the committee they chose the name Oxford.  It was supposed to be far enough away to seclude its imates from the bright lights of Chch but close enough to build a tram link.  It never worked out, Oxford became and remained a small rural service town for western North Canterbury.  No mass migrations of Oxfordshire folk I'm afraid.

New Zealand Resources & Offers / Re: Sussex Emigrants to New Zealand 1839-42

Hi Chris,

I am one of the myriads of Thomas Richardson's descendents (he may have started poor but he did pretty well once he got here).
I have a question, not about the list as shown here but as it is shown on the 1066 page.  That version shows TR's wife as being "Mercy".  TR's wife was Delia nee Burgess.  So I was wondering if you knew the source they used for that handout.

Kia ora
C. Screw.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Kaiapoi Newspapers
« on: Thursday 19 March 09 03:37 GMT (UK)  »
Pishaw - of course Kaiapoi had its own newspapers,  The Kaiapoi Record for one and other papers that covered North Canterbury (The Rangiora Standard, The NC Guardian, The Oxford and Cust Observer, The Recorder and The NC Gazette).  Nowadays the region is served by the Northern Outlock and the NC News.

My mother wrote the history of Kaiapoi, and she says even finding paper copies of these are difficult.  They are split between the Canterbury, Kaiapoi and Rangiora Museums, the Christchurch City and Waimakariri District libraries and private collections.  Unfortunately none of these are on line, nor does there seem to be any great drive to put them up.

New Zealand Completed Requests / BDM restrictions

We believe that the new “Historical Information” restrictions will also retrospectively apply to any BMD Index info that is/has been published on any website or intranet site.

This means that information posted for lookups must be as follows:
Birth: must be 100+ years ago
Marriage: 80+ years
Death: if the death occurred 50+ years ago OR the person was born 80+ years ago.

Any information that does not comply with these time restrictions will be deleted immediately.
We will also need to delete all information on completed posts that does not comply.

These are radical changes to what we have been used to doing in the past.
Your help in this matter to keep RootsChat “within the law” would be appreciated.

I am a little confused by this statement on the top of the board and before I go off making requests and becoming frustrated because they are being deleted can I just get some clarification; if the person I am requesting information was, say married in 1954, is the above saying it would be illegal to post this information?
