Thanks for the census info re John. I'll have a look.

Re witnesses, they are a 'Richard Gillmon' and the mark of a 'Maria Green' - ie apparently not family.

Thanks again. :)

Ireland / Help with Halpin and Moffet emigrants

I wonder if anyone can help me?

1. On my mum's side I have a Benjamin Pickering marrying a Letitica Halpin/Halpen/Halfpin in 1846 in a Catholic Church in Wirral, Chester. It states her father was Edward Halfpen, a labourer. On the 1851 census, her birthplace was given as Scotland, Glasgow, on the 1861 census Lincolnshire, and on the 1871 census birthplace is given as Ireland. I well imagine the family originated in Ireland, but was Letitia in England following the family's perhaps move to Scotland?

From her marriage certificate and subsequent census, Letitia Halpin/Halpen/Halfpin would have been born about 1821.

How can I trace her birth record, and family record/information?  ???

2. Letitia and Benjamin's son, John Edward Pickering married an Ann(e) Moffet(t) in 1871. They married in St Mary's Catholic Chapel, Shaw Street, Oldham. Ann's father is named as John Moffet(t), a tailor.

The marriage certificate is the only time that her first name is spelled with an 'e' at the end, and for both Ann and her father, the second 't' in the surname has been crossed out/corrected.

Although on the marriage cert if states Ann(e) was 21 years old, the 1871 census a few months later states she was 18 years old. The various census/records etc suggest varying birth years - anything from 1850, to 1853, to 1855, 1856 and, in the 1911 census 1858  :o

The 1871 & 1881 census give Ann's birthplace as Ireland, though 1891, 1901 and 1911 give it as Oldham.

How can I trace Ann's birth record and other family?  ???

Hints/work that others might have done would be gratefully received. 8)
