With regards to succession. Charles will be, and should be King. I think he will probably hold the Crown for a small period of time - say 5 years - and will abdicate. He is a moderniser.

I'd be amazed if that happened.  Edward VIII abdicated before his coronation and that caused no end of heartache for Charles's grandparents.  I'm pretty certain Charles would not treat his coronation oaths so lightly.

It wouldn't surprise me, though, if the Queen outlived him.

Irene; I'm sure one of the Mod's will shift this to Armed Forces for ye. Those peeps'll sort it out  ;)

Oh, sorry.  I wasn't aware there was an armed forces section.  I had a quick look through the board but must have missed it.

Yes, mods.  Please move this.  Many thanks!

Man, this is such a good board  :D

Can anybody advise me as to what this medal/badge represents?  It was my grandfather's.

I've looked on google, but couldn't actually find much information.

Many thanks!

Well, you might consider moving this post to the London section here
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,24.0.html

or the Common Room here
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=46

rather than have it here in the Handwriting Deciphering section :)

Cheers,
China

*Moderator Comment:  Moved to Common Room :) *

Sorry!  I realised after I'd posted this that it was in the wrong section, but wasn't sure how I could move it.

Thanks!

The Common Room / Billingsgate Fish Porter
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone could advise me.  My great-grandfather, Walter Richard Willis, was a Billingsgate fish porter before joining the army during WW1.  He was killed in action at the Battle of Loos in 1915 and we were always told that his name was on the Memorial Plaque at Billingsgate.  A relative of mine recently took a photo of the plaque and his name is not on it.  We know he was a porter because someone in the family has the special hat he used.  We were wondering if maybe he didn't work for the Corporation of London, but for one of the smaller firms within Billingsgate.

Any advice as to how I might find out?

The Common Room / Re: Searching for a BENHAM birth
« on: Monday 18 October 10 16:57 BST (UK)  »
Having said the above, I've now found four children born to Benham and Collins between 1913 and 1916 - registered in St. Geo in the East and Mile End, so I'm pretty sure they must be the right ones.  It might be that the earlier children were registered under different first names, although I can't see many children born before 1910 for the Mile End or St. George areas, or maybe they just never got round to registering the older kids!

So frustrating!!

I haven't been able to find the birth certificates of any of the children, which makes me suspect that their parents didn't register them - or possibly that they were registered with different names.   I'm pretty certain Lena wasn't adopted into the family - I'm sure my dad would have known that, although I can't be sure of course.  Interestingly, Lena's youngest daughter, who was only 3 at the time, had to be adopted into another branch of the family when her mother died.  No help from Social Services in those days!  She grew up believing that her brothers and elder sister were her cousins and wasn't told until she was 16.
