The Stay Safe Board / Re: Positive Ideas of How to keep entertained at home
« on: Monday 23 March 20 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
Well I am knitting baby clothes for premature babies for the hospitals and its very therapeautic knowing you are helping that way. I also have lots of unread books to read, videos, DVDs, jig saws, CD's to listen to, adult colouring books and fibre tips and of course the internet which is a boon you can look at places all over the world on Google Earth site.  So keep happy and keep the faith whatever you like to do xx

Caernarvonshire / John Jones b.1851 Llanrhos married to Ellen Jones b.1861
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Some of you will remember me posting at length some months ago about my ancestor John Jones born in Llanrhos at Marl Smithy on Marl Lane.

For months, if not years, I thought he might have gone back to his roots there living at a property called 'Bryn Gwilym' across the road from the smithy.  Well he is the last Welsh ancestor I am searching for as I have found most of
the ones I am interested in and I sent off for a death certificate I thought may have been him - today having received the certificate unfortunately I am disappointed to find out the wrong Jones family lived there within the time frame I am wanting. So on we go......

John b.1851 was one of 4 sons born to John (his father) and Ellen (his mother) and I have found out what happened to 3 of the other sons. John married in 1899 in Llanellian yn Rhos church where he was apparently living at the time in the vicarage and was a gardener there. His wife was called Ellen Jones (just like his mother - so confusing) and in 1901 they lived in Llanrhos but in 1911 census were living at  Seaview Terrace in Colwyn Bay. I don't think there were any children born as he was 47 and his wife was 38 at that time but it's a possibility of course. As Ellen was a lodging house keeper and this Bryn Gwilym was a house offering rooms to let this led me to think he might have gone back to Llanrhos where he was born and where his parents and grandparents are buried. So far I have no proof.

There were a family called Jones living at the above property and I sent off for a death certificate for a John Jones who died there in 1923 aged 72 (jobbing gardener) with a son mentioned as being at the death called William. (one of John's brothers was called William b.1858)  It's so confusing because I haven't found any offspring for John and Ellen.  Has anyone any ideas as to where I can go from here........

Thanks Sue x

Laois (Queens) / Kathleen Byrne born in 1890
« on: Saturday 20 May 17 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Kathleen Byrne born in 1890 married my welsh grandfather Robert Thomas Jones  when they lived in Colwyn Bay. Kathleen was working at a hotel  Their child was my father John Robert Jones b.1909 in Colwyn Bay,

After my grandfather Robert Thomas went off to the war in 1913 I think Kathleen left my father to be brought up by his grandparents. I have no idea where she went after that date. It may be she went back to Ireland?

Her father was called John Byrne and he was a joiner apparently.  I am of the opinion that she and my father's father Robert Thomas split up and it is possible she went to live in Manchester?

I would like to know what happened to Kathleen as I know all about Robert Thomas (grandfather)
I would like to close the files. Robert died in 1961 and I do know where he is buried but not what happened to Kathleen. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Caernarvonshire / John Jones Llanrhos
« on: Wednesday 10 May 17 23:53 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone on the site who visits St.Hilary's Churchyard Llanrhos?  I am hoping to find a burial in the name of John Jones, buried in the churchyard (not the main cemetery) October 1923.

He is the last of the 4 sons my great great grandfather John Jones had and I have found the burial sites of the other three.  The John I am seeking has his father in Llanrhos who is buried with his first wife (not this John's mother) and my great great  great grandparents are also buried in Llanrhos churchyard almost within sight of the church itself. My parents are buried in Rhyl my father was Welsh.

I have driven over from Manchester myself to visit the above graves and Llanellian and Bron-y-Nant where other welsh relatives are buried but since I broke one of my toes I cannot drive long distances anymore.

If anyone visits the cemetery at Llanrhos and would be able to help it would be appreciated. I do not know which grave only the month and year of burial and his age was 72 years old. I would also like to discover if anyone else is mentioned on the headstone as I think John married an Ellen

Any help would be appreciated - thanks  sue

Hi Tara thanks for your input, yes it is interesting the research you have done so far for me.  I know nothing about Ireland I just know Kathleen came from there and it is possible she lived in the area of Queen's County at Dysartgallen?

I have never heard anyone mention her as being called 'Kate' but I realise it is a shortened version of Kathleen.  Kathleen would have left the home by 1911 as she was living in Llandrillo Yn Rhos Wales and married my grandfather in 1913 so that would fit in with why she was not on a 1911 census of Ireland but on the 1911 census of England and Wales?

I am hoping this will prove to be the family and will try to do some more research.  They were a catholic family as my grandfather was also.  I am a little surprised they got married in a registry office though being catholic, but it was 1913 and the Great War was looming large.  Her and Grandfather were 23 at the time of marriage and he went off to war shortly after they  married. They only had one child - my father.

Thanks to everyone who has tried their hardest to sort my query out.  I am still on the quest for any details on her mother and if there were any siblings.  Her father John William Byrne, I do not know his date of birth yet and he was noted on their marriage certificate as being deceased.  His trade is also on the certificate as 'joiner'.

So still delving but thanks to everyone who has kindly taken the trouble so far.

Laois (Queens) / Kathleen Byrne

Kathleen Byrne was born in 1890 in Queenscounty Ireland.  She married my grandfather Robert Thomas Jones born in 1890 in Colwyn and they married in the register office, Conway in March 1913.  Kathleen's father was John William Byrne (deceased) at that time.

I am anxious to know whether Kathleen had any siblings and what her mother was called etc.

Any information about the above would be greatly appreciated.

Caernarvonshire / Elizabeth Thomas/Jones
« on: Monday 27 April 15 01:02 BST (UK)  »
Any information on Elizabeth Thomas b.1847/48 in nant-y-felin Llanfairfechan to Ellen Thomas my great, great grandmother who was obviously unmarried at the time.

Ellen married my great, great grandfather John Jones in 1851 after his 1st wife had died in 1850 and Ellen  brought to the marriage this little daughter Elizabeth.  She also bore John 4 sons who I have details of, but I cannot find what happened to Elizabeth, i.e. who she married, did she change her name to Jones as on one of the census when she lived with John and her mother Ellen and family she appears as Elizabeth Jones!  Did people adopt children in those days or did they just change the surname to who their mother married?  The family lived at The Smithy in Llanrhos for many years as John was a blacksmith, then Llanfairfechan and eventually Colwyn Bay. I have no idea where to find details of her at all, especially as she may have changed her name to 'Jones'.

Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Caernarvonshire / Eigiau and Cowlyd reservoirs
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Many years ago when I was able to clamber up mountains, I used to walk in the hills above Dolgarrog to the two reservoirs.  It was always so peaceful with beautiful scenery and hardly another soul in sight!  There were lots of ruins of hill farms up there and I always wondered what sort of people would wish to live in such isolation.

I bought some literature about these hill farms and it has always fascinated me, about the area and the people who lived in the Conway valley because they must have been hardy souls indeed! Such isolation, no distractions just the sound of the many sheep or bulls I witnessed on my visits.

Does anyone have relatives who lived up in the valley concerned?  Unfortunately all my ancestors were in Llanrhos/llanfairfechan/Old Colwyn, Colwyn Bay etc.
