Thanks for that Stewart, I'd just seen references to the street names without realising it was the one shop - down to not knowing the geography of Stirling I suppose.

Thanks also for the photo, it must have been quite impressive in its day,

Hi, I haven't checked in for ages but the site sent me a message. Good to hear from you. I don't know much about the McCullochs but you're definitely right about the shop going on to be a big store.
I had an e mail from Stirling Library where they have a booklet issued by the firm. It says that Robert McCulloch came from Galloway to work in a drapers shop. A few years later in 1893 he went into partnership with Robert Young and they started their own business. Six years later (1899) Robert Young retired from the business.
It uses the word "retired" but he was only a young man and came to England and started again.
McCulloch and Young had shops in King St, Baker St and Spittal St.

In 1897 Robert Young was living at 30 Nelson Place, Stirling and Robert McCulloch was at 12 Nelson Place.

At the time I was looking into this I did do some research into the McCulloch family, which I haven't kept unfortunately. I was looking for dates of his marriage to see if our Robert was jilted or was the not chosen one of the two of them,(which was what the family always said)  but Robert McCulloch and his wife were married long before this time as far as I can recall.
Family stories have always said he left the partnership over a woman but you can never be sure about them, it could have been anything I suppose. I did suspect a less than honourable liaison between our Robert and Mr McCulloch's wife but who knows? It all seems to have worked out in the end anyway.

If you want to know anything about our Robert please ask and if you can add anything to my knowledge of their circumstances in Stirling I would be greatful,

Hilary

I'm not sure if it's Brightsolid or the Scottish government that is against a subscription based site - I would guess it's the gov since Findmypast seems to do ok for Brightsolid. Either way it's a shame and must be causing a lot of bad feeling.
I know I'm not the only one who won't buy credits for SP - in my case it's because I can't afford it, but there are others who believe a boycot would soon change their minds.
If there were a subscription option I would happily swap from Ancestry for a year as my English half is as complete as it can be at the moment.
i've found that the most fun comes from exploring side branches and getting sidetracked which you can't do on a pay as you go site.
I'll do this trip on Saturday (from Yorkshire to Cumbernauld for a one night stay!) then give up I think unless I find something major. That seems less likely now I've looked at the memorial site.

Thank you for the link to the memorial site - I've had a very quick look tonight and can't see any Youngs that I recognise, I'll have to look more closely tomorrow. The trouble is I don't know any of their spouse' names so it's a bit hit and miss anyway. I hope there will be family headstones that will link some together.
I completely agree with you about the comparable costs of certs in England and SP, it's definitely much cheaper in that respect, it's the searching and identifying that is hard in Scotland.
Maybe I've just been lucky in that most of my family come from Somerset and Kent where there is almost full coverage of parish records freely available online - not just on Free reg (which I transcribe for by the way) but on many private sites. Also having an Ancestry subscription means you can do unlimited searches which is great for tracking out side branches. I think I'd be more accepting of SP if they were a subscription service, when I tried it a couple of years ago I found the credits disappeared before I got anywhere and it was very frustrating.

Thanks for trying, it's a fiendishly common group of names so I haven't been able to trace out the children (apart from Robert who is my gr gr grandfather.
I was hoping for clues about them before 1798 when the first child was born in Cumbernauld, or maybe their children apart from Robert.
Cumbernauld births are available online so I have been able to do that bit. Marriages are more problematic though what with the common names (both family and christian).
I am visiting Cumbernauld next weekend for a look round. I've never been to Scotland before so though it would be a good idea to familiarise myself with the area and have a look round the graveyard at the same time - might get some clues there. It will be a flying visit though for one night because of the cost.
It's cost that stops me using Scotlands People as well. I can't believe they have such a monopoly on information which is freely available in England. It's impossible for pensioners!

Lanarkshire / Barony marriage
« on: Friday 04 March 11 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have a couple who were married in Barony I believe. They were Robert Young and Janet Wardrop, 7th Jun 1793.

I also believe he was a cornmiller.

Can anyone help me find anything else about them - their parents, where they lived or where they went to after their marriage (it might have been Cumbernauld, they had children there later on) but there is a seven year gap between their marriage and their first child born in Cumbernauld in 1800.

Thanks
Hilary

Hi Dave, adding to your list I'm afraid, hope you don't mind.

I'm looking for Youngs in Cumbernauld, particularly Robert and Janet born about 1790 and their children; Ann, Robert, Janet, James and William.

If the children died young then I can stop wasting time trying to find them.

Thanks

Thank you both, I have the cert ordered so when that arrives I should know for sure whether this is the right family and then I'm all set for further research - fingers crossed.
Thanks again
Hilary
