According to this book (found by Google): "Punishing the Dead?: Suicide, Lordship, and Community in Britain, 1500-1830" it means he suicided.

Thank you everyone. I was making a wild guess at about 1910 so it's great to have it confirmed.

Can someone help with a date for these fantastical hats?
I think the lady on the left is Kate Hopkins nee Fennessy, born 1853.
Thank you for helping – much appreciated! :)

Same edition of the bible by the look of it – yours matches mine! I think yours had better handwriting though  :)
Gedcom, bible pics and census info on it's way in 2 emails – make sure you can get 4.6 MB files.

Hi Joy
I can send you a gedcom but will need your email address. It is not recommended to post that here, so will need to be via a rootschat private message. Unfortunately as you are a new member I can only message you when you have more than 3 posts (I suppose it's to prove you aren't a robot!) – so go ahead and post some more, then message me and we can get going. I can send you photos of the bible scans and may be able to contact you to another Noble relative too.
Cheers, Rian

Thank you!

Wow!What a lot of information. It certainly looks like the Portals were his employers. I see that Tonge house is now in the centre of the Royal Circus roundabout and is a home for elderly ladies.

I know that Robert Warren went to Australia sometime prior to 1891, but not when. This ad would suggest that he had left before May 89 (his son was in Australia by 1884).
Robert became the head gardener at Government House in Brisbane, so he must have had good references.

I think you have cracked it – thank you so much!

Thanks for your clever detective work!
I see Norwood on the top of the page now you point it out.
Is Lambeth a large area for the point of view of the census then? Norwood seems to be quite a long way from where we were looking originally.

Now I'm REALLY confused as to who Robert worked for!
