Hi BAC3,

In an earlier post I mentioned Hokitika Museum. Can I suggest that you email them in case they are open and can assist you.
https://www.hokitikamuseum.nz/contact-the-museum/

I visited them some years ago. They were very helpful.

Walter is listed on this page of WA convicts.

Just as a comparison against the passenger Walter PENKETH who travelled from VIC AUS to Otago per Genii in 1861, I've found a 'maybe' in a W. PINKADE aged 29 from travelled the same route in 1863 per Aldinga.

Hi Sparrett,

That certainly looks a brother.

A J. PENKETH arrived at Port Chalmers from Melbourne per the City of Hobart in 1864. Single.

I can't find a NZ marriage for him, though.

He appears in the Otago Nominal Index from 1867-1886 inclusive living at Hamilton's, Mt Ida.

Thanks very much for the tip Mckha, I didn't know that was possible.

I wonder if NZBDM have mis-transcribed his name, perhaps? And wildcard searching isn't available on the website.

I was going suggest that you try the Westland branch of NZSG, the History House Museum at Greytown and the Hokitika Museum, but it appears that the first two are defunct while the latter is temporally temporarily (sheesh ::)) closed.

Find a Grave have this list of eighty-two interments at Nelson Creek Cemetery, but no PENKETH appears.

https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2566314/memorial-search?cemeteryName=Nelson%20Creek%20Cemetery&page=1#sr-141512891

Addendum: the web page reports that only 55% of the memorials have been photographed.

I suggest that you contact the Westland Genealogy Group in case they can help. I have found this PDF file on line but no website.

Hi BAC3,

It's good to see you back.

To provide some context to the article in the Grey River Argus, the news was provided by a correspondent from Nelson Creek.

Reed's Place Names of New Zealand describes Nelson Creek as located 8km from Ngahere on the West Coast (e.g. Westland), 'The stream is a tributary of the Grey River/Mawheranui, previously known as Mill Creek. The locality was previously known as Hatters Terrace. A hatter was a fossicker for gold (a hatter was nearly lynched here under suspicion of starting a duffer's rush but his find proved payable).'

The locality is now known as Nelson Creek Recreation Reserve.

The article implies that Walter PENKETH was interred at or near Nelson Creek. Can anyone find a record of any historial burials in the area?

I cannot find a matching death entry on NZ BDM for this man under the spelling PENKETH.

Regards,
