Hello lizdb
Thank you for your email about the will of Philip Saterthwayte of Harborne, Leicestershire. I know the Philip I mentioned died between 1607 and 1610 so I'll try to find it and see it gives me any clues.
Kind regards
Arjem.

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Bryan Satterthwaite of Hallaton c1600
« on: Wednesday 29 August 18 11:54 BST (UK)  »
I am descended from Bryan Satterthwaite of Hallaton via his daughter Sara. He and his wife (name unknown) were having children during the first decade of the 17C, and some descendants lived at Goadby. What I would love to know is more about Bryan himself: where did he come from? What was his occupation? (I suspect he may have been a mercer or glover but don't know this for certain.) Who was his wife? His brothers and sisters if any?
A Philip Satterthwaite was churchwarden at Market Harborough at about this time and c1569 a Richard Satterthwaite took out a lease on some land at Gt Bowden but I've found no evidence they were related to Bryan. Can anyone help please? Many thanks. Arjem.

Leicestershire / Re: thomas stevenson and christian curtis

Hi DMS2000
Re the Leicestershire and Rutland County Record Office, I come from Leics originally and still have family there so am able to visit the CRO occasionally; this is how I managed to find Joe Curtis's will.  I don't know if they have a research service; try Googling them and investigating their website to see what they offer.  Or maybe the National Archives online wills includes Joseph's?
Re Withyham, yes I have ancestors there on my father's side; their name was Tomsett/Tompsett (or any other variation!)
Are they yours by any chance?

Kind regards

Hi, Thanks Lestisherlvr for the info about Napthali. (Unusual name!!)

Dms2000: I wasn't sure at the time whether Curtis was the son of Tom and Chris, hence "possibly"  (I'm not descended from them tho' I think I may have a distant family connection with Thomas - too complicated to explain here!!)
Re your question about Christian's parents: her father Joseph Curtis was a plasterer, he left a will which is in the Leics and Rut CRO.  From memory, Christian received a small legacy; also Joseph left a lime kiln to his grandson if the g/son stayed at Medbourne.  If he should leave, the kiln was to go to Thomas Stevenson; presumably he was a plasterer too.  I think Jo had houses at Uppingham and Medbourne which went to Christian's brothers.  Can't find the notes I made about it but I hope this is helpful!

Leicestershire / Re: Christopher Stevenson born c1793

Thanks Mercian for your e-mail.

Allen, s/o Innkeepers Len and Jane was buried 3/3/1762 (Hallaton PRs).  As for the parents of Leonard who made the will: I go for Thomas and Mary.  See National Burial Index:  4 November 1830 Leonard Stevenson age 73 buried at Hallaton, St Michael & All Angels.  This means he would have been born c1757.

Best wishes

South Africa / Tomsett
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 19:36 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather, Frank Tomsett ( b 1863 Withyham, Sussex) deserted his wife Margaret Moss and daughters, probably between 1907 and 1911, and went to South Africa where he died in 1954.  Later his three sons joined him there:

Harold Charles (bn c1889) and Arthur Frank (bn c1892) both appear on the UK census for 1911 and it seems that Harold married Millicent Parker in London in that year.  He and Arthur may have sailed to SA in November 1911.  A son Harold F E Tomsett was born to Harold and Millicent in London in 1915.  Harold Charles died in SA in 1920.  A Harold Tomsett visited other parts of Africa during WW1 but there is no evidence that this is the same man.

Arthur made a living in SA designing golf courses and married Mary Beatrice Urban.  He died in 1971.

The youngest son, Ramsey Cecil, (bn c 1894) does not appear on the 1911 census and may have gone with Frank.  He returned to the UK at intervals throughout his life and died unmarried in 1966.

All three sons were born at Rotherfield, Sussex.  The only other information I have is that one of them seems to have had a descendant called Bernadine Sandford who was living in Johannesburg in the late 1960s.

Is there anyone who can give me any information about Frank or his sons please?  Thanks.
