Yorkshire (West Riding) / Too many Josephs
« on: Saturday 25 September 21 12:08 BST (UK)  »
Joseph Oldroyd had a son, Robert born in October 1758 in Sandal Magna

So I'm looking for the marriage of Joseph circa 1758 in or around Sandal Magna so that I can track the correct Joseph but also the mother of Robert too.

I initially found the marriage of Joseph and Elizabeth Wright just up the road in Dewsbury in February 1758, and both are listed as of the parish of Sandal Magna.

A direct hit I thought until, i then found a second marriage in Sandal Magna itself of Joseph Oldroyd and Mary Martin in May 1759, and then just for good measure I then found a third, in August 1757 between Joseph Oldroyd and Eleanor Parker in Dewsbury

Have to say that as helpful sometimes as naming patterns are in helping identify family members, it can also be a hinderance.

I suspect all the above Oldroyds are ultimately related in some way.

I'm tending to go for Joseph and Elizabeth at the moment, simply because i've also traced a document that lists the resettlement of the poor of Sandal Magna (in this case "Joseph Oldroyd, Elizabeth his wife and their son Robert" in nearby Darfield in October 1760

Was he the father of Mary who married George Dickinson in 1847 - if so he is stlll alive in 1841 and in 1851 he has grandson Edward Dickinson staying with him.  That John was apparently born in Canada c1787

ADDED Possible death
Mar qtr 1878
Mackenzie    John   age 92
Pontefract    9c   65

Hi Rosie

I'm hoping that he turns out to be the Grandfather of Mary

I already have Mary's father, John McKenzie born 1786 Newfoundland, died 1878 Pontefract.

I also think I have Mary's Grandmother, also Mary, born circa 1765 (not sure where yet) died 1849 Pontefract

Daisy

Hi Daisy, I'm hoping that's not the one, I was rather hoping to find someone in the 60's to 80's

Looking for a burial in 1837

There's a John Mckenzie/Mackenzie died 1837, I can find limited details from BMD on both Ancestry and Find My Past, but no entry on GRO (I've chased them up)

I'm trying to ascertain age at death to see if this John Mckenzie could be one of my missing ancestors

I've looked through images of burials for Pontefract St Giles/St Marys, but for 1837 i can't find any records for Pontefract All Saints, there don't seem to be any available.

Anyone know of an alternative source that might give me a lead ?

James came from Falkirk (born c1786) and ended up as a servant to the Rector of Badsworth, where he married one of my relatives - I know of 4 children. Other than the 1841 census (in Badsworth), most of what I know about him is from his memorial:

I came across this Mckenzie the other week and made a few notes. It seemed to fit the bill as a possible brother of my 3rd Gt Grandfather John McKenzie. My John was born in Newfoundland circa 1786 before returning to England to join the Royal Horse Artillery (serving 1798-1827). After leaving the RHA John returned to Pontefract where he married and raised a family.

Its this John Mckenzie (1786-1878), who's parents I was hoping to find, and this particular John and Mary fit the timeframe and locality.

There's an elderly lady on Ancestry who has the James you mentioned in her tree, along with parents and siblings, and yes even a John, but she has all James siblings as born in Scotland, and other than James, living their entire lives in Scotland too.

Oh well, I'll keep looking.

Quote
"wife of John (laborer) " hinting that John may or may not have been alive at the time of her death.

That would indicate he was alive otherwise it would say "widow of John"

Do you have the name of the informant on the death certificate?

Hi, informant was one Elizabeth Higgins.

I've found two possibles, one of which lived in the vacinity of Mary when she died "near old Church",  but no likely John or Marys nearby on the census.

I have a Mary Mackenzie born circa 1765 and died in Pontefract in October 1849

Mary's death registered her as being "wife of John (laborer) " hinting that John may or may not have been alive at the time of her death.

I suspect John may have been in either in the military or a merchant seaman when young(er)

I've looked for Mary and/or John in the 1841 census but have drawn a complete blank.

I guess looking for Mckenzies is a bit like looking for a Smith or a Jones, but thought I'd ask just in case there any Mackenzie descendants out there.

Cheers

Just came across this thread by accident

My 3rd Great Grandfather John McKenzie was born in Newfoundland in circa 1786, signed up for the Royal Horse Artillery in Woolwich in 1798, served at Waterloo, before being discharged on health grounds in 1827.

In the interim he married and raised a family in Pontefract, but I could never understand the Pontefract connection, or how it came about.

I have never been able to find anything about John parentage, although recently I've come across a James Mckenzie who was living in nearby Badsworth around the same time and he also served in the RHA between 1805-1826. James was born in Falkirk. I'm currently looking into the possibility of their having been brothers.

Having read about the Yorkshire rebellion, I can only hope that John was not too active a participant in quelling the uprising.
