Sadly this house went on fire last night, looked like it suffered quite a bit of damage in the fire & may have to be demolished, shame as it was a lovely looking house.

While we're on Disreali Street....why was Morpeth Road School (old one ) so called? There is no Morpeth Road in the area?

Was Cowpen Road known as "the Morpeth road" locally?

I believe part of Cowpen Road was once called Morpeth Road, Redheads sweet factory was listed in The Kelly's Trade Directory for Northumberland for 1914 as being in Morpeth Road,Waterloo.

Hi Jo

I'll report it to the moderator.

Meanwhile, if you're up for it, I'd be really grateful for your help with p96 of the Sheen/Stewart book (I've seen it reffed on another website), where they are talking about the incredible idea that effectively the Germans knew the Tynesiders were coming because they had overheard them talking on the telephone, and not to worry as they had artillery to help them.

Is there a footnote explaining where they got this stuff from? Some German book perhaps?

be very grateful

Jonathan

I don't have my copy of the book at home with me at the minute, I've lent it out to a family member, but if I get it back soon I'll certainly look for you.

Joan

Hi Jo - i actually want to ask a question about the Sheen/Stewart book about the Tyneside Scottish but I see that topic is locked - any particular reason?

I've no idea why that thread would be locked,  perhaps the board moderator could help?

Hi and thanks, any other information that is available would be a great help, I'm not sure how much info is given online but as I have no info whatsoever on this couple who are my o/h's grandparents anything I can  find out for him would be a bonus.

Could this be the marriage of Anthony to Phillis?

Anthony YATES to Philis Robson 14th April 1793 Houghton Le Spring, Durham

It could well be, the year would be about right, making Phillis 20 when she married  :)
