Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Unnamed Provost baptism Thorney
« on: Monday 13 March 23 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
Would it be possible to see the original document for the printed transcript of Thorney Parish Records held at Cambridge Record Office? I have an unnamed Provost who was baptised on 8 January (could be June) 1795 Thorney d. of Abraham & Ann. Need to check if it has been transcribed correctly, particularly if it was a son rather than a daughter. Thanks.

Hi Daisy, no unfortunately I haven't found any more on her.

I'm sure something will turn up one day  :)

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat :)

I think this could be Ann in 1851, transcribed as PROOST at Ancestry and FindMyPast,

1851
23 Boar Lane, Leeds, Yorkshire

Ann   PROOST    Serv    U    21    Domestic Servant    Yorkshire,  York

living in the household of Jonathan W FIRBY.

Regards,
Daisy

I'm certain that this is my Ann. I've had a very close look at the original record and it appears to me to have been transcribed incorrectly - I'm quite sure it's PROVST which makes more sense to me. I've reported it to FindMyPast and see if they agree. I've still been unable to find her after this date though.

Thanks. It certainly looks that way. I think he was born in the July of 1863 which would make him 18 months older than stated when he enlisted.

My great grand-uncle, Thomas, was born Sep Qtr 1863. When he enlisted in the RMLI on 26 February 1885 he gave his DOB as 26 March 1865, making him 19 not 21. Is there a reason why he would have given a different DOB? BMD records agree 1863 being his birth date. I'm sure it's the same Thomas.

Thank you, yes I have all that.

They were in Marsh Lane on the 1841 census, minus daughter Amelia who was a female servant in Fishergate.

Ann is the only one of the family that I haven't been able to trace within Preston or Liverpool but it looks like the two records mentioned in Leeds may be her, I just need to confirm them.

I can't find any marriage, death or burial records for her.

I haven't found anything further on Ann, but I've found a little more about Jonathan Wood Firby.

From The London Gazette, he had previously been in partnership with Robert Smalpage, carrying on the business of Undertakers under the name of Smalpage and Firby in Leeds. The partnership was dissolved on 23 July 1849.

The 1851 census shows him at 23 Boar Lane where he was a Hosier & Glover.

From Slater's Commercial Directory of Durham, Northumberland & Yorkshire, 1855, he was a Hatter and Undertaker at 24 Boar Lane, Leeds.

Just building a small picture of where she may have worked and who she worked for.

Hi Daisy

Thanks, that's brilliant, I'll check it out in the morning  :)

Out of all the surname variations that particular one didn't appear in my searches.

Best regards.

Steve
