Thank you Dee Jay. That certainly gives me a clear line to follow. Hopefully I can work my way back further  now.
Best Wishes

Hi sabees,
I have obtained a copy of Ann Eliza's birth certificate. Her mother is definitely Eleanor Beasley, and she was born in Jordan Well, William's occupation recorded as "file smith".
The annotation of surname "Roberts" on the "John" passenger list is an incorrect additon put in at a later date according to a member of SAGHS who has seen the original.
The family on the census could be the other William Dent and family. It is possible that William and Eleanor were already on their new holding and missed the census at that time. Or the older sons could have been elsewhere on that particular day. Lots of possibilities.
Cheers

Hi Nick,
I have been going over my notes again and wondered if you could tell me what happened to William Dent, b. 24 Jan 1798, son of William Dent and Jane Wilkinson. Some family trees have his death in 1877, but there is no other information. Would you have any other information on him?
Many thanks
Bronwyn

I'll go with Elizabeth Dallimore as her mother then.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. In fact I have Joshua and Sarah down as parents for William. His son Thomas, my great *3 grandfather  emigrated to South Australia after his marriage to Jemima Grant and the birth of their first son James. I have Stephen, Charles, Job, John and Mary Ann as Thomas' siblings, but may be wrong. I wasn't sure if Joshua was the right father  for William or not. Your explanation certainly clears up why the alias disappears and reappears.

I'm currently trying to work out which Grant family Jemima, his wife, came from as her father was John and there are two of them. I think she is the daughter of John and Elizabeth, siblings Eleanor, Martha, Dinah and Sarah, of Rowde. There is another John Grant from further south, but I don't think he is the right one. Could you throw any light on this perhaps?

Many thanks to you.

Wiltshire / SIMS or SHIPMAN of All Cannings

I've recently come across the interesting christening/marriage entry of "Sims or Shipman" for family entries at All Cannings. Sometimes the names are together, sometimes one or the other, and it seems to happen across 17th, 18th and 19th century entries. Could anyone tell me if this is peculiar to just one family and/or what it means?

In particular I am looking at Thomas Sims or Shipman, christened in 1823 and married in 1844, and his father William Sims or Shipman, married 1821.

Many Thanks

Yes I think you have something there.

As there are two families with similar parents names arriving in SA in the same year, that would explain a lot.
If you go to boards.ancestry.com.au and do a surname search for William Owen Kitchener Dent, you will find the information that I found some time ago. It is a bit of a jumble but it seems both families have been mixed together there. Your William would be the 37 year old from Jordan Well, Coventry, fitting smith. I haven't been able to contact the person who posted this information to get references and sort it out, but your information may help us to do so.

I probably do have the wrong Eleanor, but as there is a baptism record for their son Joseph (H)Etherington Dent on the IGI for Coventry in 1832, both families must have originated in Coventry as well. What a coincidence.

Thankyou Suz.

I found a William Dent born 1800 in Mancetter, to William and Ann Dent. The parents, I assume, are William Dent and Ann Kitchin, married in Mancetter in Jan 1799. I wonder if William jnr has any siblings?

I am hoping that Joseph and William snr are brothers...

Cheers

Would anyone have information on Joseph and Sarah Dent married 19 July 1790 in Mancetter, possibly 2 sons named Joseph christened 1793 and 1795 in Mancetter (the older died 8 November 1794)? I am looking for siblings for the children, and children's grandparents.

Thank you
Bronwyn
