Dumfriesshire / Re: William Irving
« on: Thursday 22 February 24 22:06 GMT (UK)  »
The Scottish Military Research Group has the following information,

The D&G Standard 19/5/1917 p.5 reported that his mother Mrs. Johnstone had been told of William's death and that her other son George of the Australians had been wounded. I have identified the family from George's service record at the National Archives of Australia.

William Irving age 26 Lance Corporal (S/3619) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William served his apprenticeship as a grocer in Annan and joined his battalion in France in April 1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in January 1916.
Born 1890 in North Street, Annan as William Beattie Dalrymple. Son of William Beattie and of Mary Ann Dalrymple of Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire.

It goes on to say that he is named as William Dalrymple on each of the 1891-1901-1911 census records.

Yes that what I mean. Each page for every cemetery is missing all MIs and all photo while the rest of
the site still intact.  I wonder if the info has been sold to Ancestry or Find My Past etc ?

Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: Charters Monument, Kirk Road, parish of Balmaghie
« on: Wednesday 25 January 23 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Phil  welcome.
Going down the Kirk road away from the Kirk, you have the monument up the small hill on your left.
A short distace along is the farmhouse. It is now known as "Auchenhay". This name is (was) displayed on the steel farm gate at its entrance.

The monument was described as-- An indifferently erected stone pillar 11 feet high. On a stone at
its base  is the following inscription.
" John Charters built this Cairn
and left this place for Canada
N. America April 1836.  Repaired
by his father and this stone Lettered,
and put up Aug't 1843
in remembrance of him, "

I never saw the inscription as it must have been buried over time.
Hope this helps.

Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: Photo of grave needed Kirkcudbright Cemetery
« on: Monday 23 January 23 01:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Karen, welcome to the site.
I have a book of M I's  (monumental inscription) for this cemetery. The headstone you are looking for is number 588 in the book. The date of death for Alexander is shown as being either  1831 or 1834.
The location for the headstone is easy. On entering the cemetery via the main gate, go straight along the footpath. About half way along on the right you come to a group of stones, all close to the edge of the path and facing you. The 1st one is a small stone in the form of an open book. It is in the name of Sgt Major  Robert C  Watson. The next one is a tall stone painted white but weathered.
It relates to  a John Rae and his wife Elizabeth Herries & family. Your stone is the next one. It is well worn .
If you go onto Find a grave and search for John Rae No # 170544879 you will see the entry for John Rae. you will see the group of stones I refered to. Click on the 2nd photo, when a new page opens click on "view original" this will open an enlarged view. You will see your stone next to the 2 mentioned before.
Hope this helps.

During the two world wars there was a very large munitions factory in Dumfries. It may be worth
contacting their museum to see if they have any records. Just Google Devil's Porridge Museum.
Had a look on S.P. on her death records  for 11 Feb. Time of death was about 11pm that night
on way to the infirmary.
If you would like a copy of the death record send me your email on a personal message.
