Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: What is likely date of this photo
« on: Sunday 25 February 24 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for your help everyone. It looks likely that the photo was taken late 1860's which would be a good fit for the age of John's two sisters.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / What is likely date of this photo

This is a photo found in the effects of my first cousin 3 times removed John McConville (1836-1919) of Drumgath, County Down. He joined the army as a teenager.
There is no name of who it is written on the back. She doesn't look like his wife but could be one of his two sisters born 1844 & 1847.
Can anyone estimate when this photograph was taken from her clothing and hairstyle?
A google image search gives similar styles from the 1860's.
I have been told that it was taken in Belfast though I don't have the original photo therefore don't know the name of the photographer.
Also a rough estimate of her age?

Dorset / Re: Hearth Tax & earlier Tax records
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 08:51 BST (UK)  »
Available Hearth tax records are posted here:

https://gams.uni-graz.at/archive/objects/context:htx/methods/sdef:Context/get?mode=records

Dorset is not listed (nor on the Database format tab) unfortunately.
There was a list somewhere a couple of years ago listing the order in which they were transcribing the counties but I can't find it anymore.

I've only just noticed that the Cheshire Hearth Tax Returns for 1664 are online.
I must have missed the announcement or it may have been only recently put online.

Does anyone know the meaning of the word "ap" on a baptism record written in latin?

e.g. the following is for a baptism record for an Edward Lewis

Edwardi filius Edwardi ap Robert Lewis & Sara ap Hugh ap Evan.

Thanks
