Hello Mary,
Thank you so much for replying to my query re the Names surname.I have been searching for info for five years and have turned up a bit of info from different places but none of it interlinks.Maybe some day it will all come together for all us curious ones. When I get time I will put a condensed  version together for you. I am just back from a short fishing trip to the west of Ireland and am still on a "high" ,but I promise you I will get down to this shortly.I would love to be able to see the book you mentioned but more of that anon. I dont know about your Names ancestors but the boyo I'm after did not leave many paper trails after him.
For now cheerio and best regards.
Peter.

Hello Audrey,
Many thanks for your prompt reply. This is the first positive indication of such a surname. I'm hoping that its from the highlands.
Again many thanks,
Peter.

Scotland / John Names
« on: Tuesday 08 February 05 20:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching an ancestor of ours who was known as John Names. He married in Co Roscommon Ireland circa 1850 and he is reputed to have come from Scotland some time previously. We do know that he was unschooled and so left no written record i.e family letters etc.Despite much research we have failed to find any "NAMES" families in Scotland. I wonder if anybody would know if this surname had any variations ? Even in Ireland he left no trail before he arrived in Roscommon which makes me suspect that he may have used another variation of his surname. Any suggestions gratefully received .
PAB.

Roscommon / Surname of" NAMES"
« on: Saturday 05 February 05 22:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find somebody who has information on the "NAMES" surname which may have been Scottish in origin and in the northern counties in the 1850's.I have traced one family in Roscommon but cannot  find any other family of the name either side of 1850. There were McNames families in the Brideswell area but I have drawn a blank there as well. Can anybody shine a bit of light on this dilemma ????? There is one "NAMES" listed for Cloonfinlough parish in the National Archives but I have failed to find him. I'm losing sleep at this stage.
Thanking you in advance.
Peter.

Carlow / RIC Death
« on: Saturday 22 January 05 22:54 GMT (UK)  »
Does anybody know how I can get information concerning the death of a Francis King who was a member of the RIC and died somewhere in County Carlow in 1887. I believe his death took place following a violent incident at an eviction but his death certificate says that he died of fever.I have tried all I know for this info to no avail and hope somebody can help me.

Donegal / Surname of NAMES of Clonmany
« on: Tuesday 11 January 05 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find a person called JOHN NAMES for a long time.We believe the family came from Scotland through the northern part of Ireland to Leitrim and thence to Roscommon where he married circa 1850. He left no paper trail. However a woman called NAMES from Clonmany is on a shipping list to the USA so I'm grasping at straws here.Is there any kind soul out there to put me out of my misery???????Thanks.
