Family History Beginners Board / hello

Hi, I am new and interested in starting tracing my family history. I know for definate that my grandmother "Fathers mum" NEWLANDS ,and my great grandparents maiden name HIGGINS were from romany gypsy. My mothers father was from an Irish family who moved over to Aberdeen and had 8 children here,CONNOR Mothers mother family STEELE .  Mothers parents are deceased, Fathers father surname SIM still alive aged 89. Anyone with same surname and information ?
