The Lighter Side / Re: Immigrating and Returning Home
« on: Saturday 09 March 24 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
My own grandfather left England for Canada after WW1, and my own father was born there, in the early 1920s. There were already family over there, mostly Isherwoods, but others, too. Think most of the Isherwoods moved to U.S.A. eventually.
Before WW2 my grandparents returned, taking up farming in an area they didn't know well, and my father stayed in Britain for the rest of his days, but he'd always hoped to return to Canada. Never did.

The Common Room / Re: Tracing an illusive Railway employee, London, 1930s

When I was trying to find an elusive Railway Driver, not in London, a member called "Red Roger" gave me good advice, and eventually I found my great grandpa!
There's always an expert -or ten - to help, on here.

I've always been amused at over complicated wedding ceremonies and venues, having been quietly married in our parish church and walking round the corner to the reception. Also amused at people "renewing their vows" -often when they were originally married in registry offices.
A delightful little girl, telling me about a nice new dress she was getting for her parents doing this, asked me if we (OH and I ) had renewed our vows. Not thinking really, I replied "Never needed to, we haven't broken them..." Ooops. Ah well.

I signed up for a repeat prescription order service online with our GP surgery, a couple of years ago - but never actually managed to get it to go through, so reverted to hanging on to the 'phone! Progress!

Trying hard to cheer up. Late last week GP's staff ordered wrong item twice, on repeat prescription, and didn't order more important one - I was so busy I didn't realise 'til too late when 2 days later I managed to find time to collect from our really efficient pharmacy.
Today spent all morning waiting (2nd week!) in vain for a call from nice man at virgin ( no-one rang) and 20 mins trying to get through to GP (cut off after 20 mins of waiting) so I'm totally frustrated all round. Grrrrr!
Great start to the week, isn't it?

OH very recently had cataract op on one eye. Apart from some stinging from one set of drops, not going too bad. He can see well via that eye, and is eager for 2nd one doing.

Talking of vanishing / re-appearing cutler, today I've just found an old butter knife that used to belong to my grandma, lurking under a box that held a silly, never used, ( from my M inLaw! says it all) tiny silver-plated cake forks. without this thread I'd probably never have looked in the bottom of that drawer, out of mere curiosity! Weird.

We've also suffered from the wandering cutlery syndrome! Main course forks - two vanished years back, as soon as I bought a "posh" full set, one actually came home, from the back porch where somehow it had gone. Never found the other. Tea / coffee spoons never seem to return.
Find the fish knives from our original set really useful for scraping out containers. My mum used to use her bone handled fish knives in the garden!!

Perhaps one of us ought to be starting a new thread for the next week  soon? Completely losing track of time at this gloomy bit of the year...
