Two possible baptisms for William Armstrong of Lanercost:

3 Nov 1799 parents William Armstrong and Jane Scott Armstrong.  Marriage 6 Jan 1787

3 May 1802 parents John Armstrong and Mary Noble. Marriage 18 Dec 1797, although this William appears to have married Elizabeth Little

Armstrong and Graham are very common names in Cumberland, especially north Cumberland, both being reiving families.  Where in Cumberland are William and Mary from?  Do you know if they went on the any have children? Have you checked Familysearch for church marriage records, pre 1837?

You could order it from the relevant register office.

The Common Room / Re: Mc Stinson (?) Private School, Blackpool 1920

There are lots of adverts in the Blackpool Gazette and Herald for a first class day and boarding school for boys, principals Arthur Anderson and C Bertram Stinson.  It also mentions that it is on the South Shore. (Don't have a sub, so can't see full advert)

Added: address in 1915 is The High School, Alexandra Road, South Shore, Blackpool

If the page doesn't photocopy well, try taking photographs of the page.  My library and Archives allow photos to be taken. Mine doesn't charge for a camera license but some might.

FreeBMD has him listed as Francesco Anzano Buonaventura Zondadari and she is listed as Frances Clotilde Geils and also listed under Dickinson.  However there are two notes attached to the enter.

Note 1: Frances Clotilde GEILS nee DICKINSON (widow) married The Very Rev. Gilbert ELLIOT Dean of Bristol

Note: 2: The Frances Dickinson who married Dean Elliot (Q4 1863 Keynsham 5c 1293) was the divorced mother of Frances Clotilde who had resumed her maiden name. Frances Clotilde Geils married Francesco Anzano Buonaventura Zondadari CHIGI at Clifton 5 Feb 1863

The letter is so interesting, recording feelings and fears of aunt Patricia.

Thanks for sharing.

It does look like Aout just above the Juillett.

Glad you think that your list of "things I might never know" has been reduced by one.

Can I add a new thing to your list? The letter you have you said was dated 8 July 1944, but Rennes wasn't liberated until 4 August 1944 - do you think that she just got the date wrong, or started the letter before liberation and finished after?

PS. There is various footage of Jean Marin giving a speech to the newly liberated town from the balcony in Rennes town square and he is named in the Army Pictorial Service description of footage they took.

This is a really interesting story.  What about the possibility that your aunt also used French and English the opposite way, so Jean would have become John?

After a bit of searching there was a BBC French speaking radio station transmitted from London, Radio Londres. After Charles De Gaulle initial broadcast on Radio Londres (July 1940) a young man named Yve Morvan made his way to De Gaulle's house in London to say he wanted to join his movement.  De Gaulle asked him to continue to broadcast with the station. He agreed and it became one of the most popular broadcast among the French. It was "Les Français parlent aux Français". He broadcast, not under his real name, but under the name of Jean Marin and stayed with the station until 1943 when De Gaulle allowed him to join the Free French Forces. He became part of  force entering Paris in 1944 and was one of the very few people to be invited to De Gaulles home for dinner and often given a box of Havannah cigars when he went.  De Gaulle described him as "one of the best of us".

Could he be John M? in your aunt's letter?

Added: his wiki page suggests he was in Renne at its liberation.
